Default Re-wiring the engine bay

My engine bay of my 67 coupe looks really ugly with wires everywhere. The previous owner, who used to be a co-worker of mine, did all thewiring himself and never used a wiring harness or anything. I think he just used whatever wire he could find lying around and it looks like he went in and out of the firewall.

Is there a wiring harness I can use to clean this all up?? I was thinking of getting a wiring harness kit for the entire car buti don't know if i'll be able to wire the entire carall at one time. Can those wiring harnesseslike the painless kit and the ronfrancis kit be installed in certain sections of the car at one time and another section at a different time or do they have to be installed in one shot??

Are there any other wiring kits that are worth looking at? I've seen some cheaper wiring harnesses from EZ wiring (I think thats what it was)that are a lot cheaper. What makes the others better/more expensive??

I look at the cars wiring as one of the most important things we can do. I've looked into a number of the wiring harnesses available to us from the 100.00 kits through to the 500.00 kits. I've decided on the Express Wiring System from Ron Francis. Ignoring the price its simply the best thing on the market and has been for a long long time. Most people I've talked to who have installed it agree. It however is one of the more expensive harnesses running in at 429.95. I read an article on the wiring and the Express Fuse panel last year and really liked what it had to say.

I'm calling and ordering a kit tomorrow and might even add the dash gauge kit as well... just to make things easier installing and down the road.

I've posted a few questions and commented in a few other threads regarding it tonight and back for a few weeks. Scan down the last 10 pages and you should find them all.

I'd suggest requesting on of their catalogs. They also reply quickly and detailed in their emails.

If your going to rewire with a kit I'd highly suggest you do the entire car at once instead of sections. Over all it'll save you time and most kits replace the stock fuse panel.

Here is a pic of the kit

Yep with a francis kit the car will pretty much have to be done at once.

If you wanted to go back stock you could probably do this in stages.

if you dont want to spend the money right now just buy some plastic wire wraps from your auto parts store untill you get around to the fix. I have been told if you have original wiring, and it works, dont touch it!

You can rewire the entire underhood in less than 2 hours if you use the wire kits that NPD provides. IMO, it's the easiest way.

I have to add my two cents on this one because it has always bothered me. Most people don't understand wiring and it scares them. They think that these after market harnesses are the greatest thing on the planet. They may be good for a custom built car but on a stock or close to stock mustang the original harness is more than good. The skills needed to install a Painless, or other aftermarket harness, are the same skills you need to figure out what is wrong with the wiring harness you havehave. So why spend all that money on a harness you don't need.

67_ Mustang this not a knock on you, I'm speaking generally. I looked at your pictures and it really doesn't look that bad. It looks like the PO didn't take the time to do a clean job when installing different things and it all added up to the engine compartment looking like ***.

The 67/8 wiring under the hood has 4 main firewall penetrations. The main harness comes out need the master cyliner and forward on the driverside then along the radiator crossmember and over to the passenger side. That will run all of your lights, your regualor/altenator and also hook up to your solenoid. Then there is the harness that goes to your coil, temp sender and oil sender. Then there is the one that goes to the transmission that will have your backup lights and neutral safety switch on it. Then you have your heater hook up but it is only two wires.

I would recommend that you take one harness at a time, while using a good schematic that is availble in the FAQ, fully understand what the wires do and what the PO did and then start rerouting wires, shortening wires and then wrap them neatly in electrical tape so it looks stock. When you get one done move on to the next harness. You will be suprized how much you can get done in a day and at the end of it you will not only know that it is right but you will understand exactly what each wire does.

If the PO has made his own firewill penetrations that usually means he had no idea what he was doing. There are usually unsused wires in the stock harness that can be used to penetrate the firewall for things like tachometers.

I will give you an example: I installed Auto meter gauges in my dash. Electronic Speedo, Tach, oil pressure, fuel level and water temp. I was not running a Amp gage or volt meter.

I used the Red wire and the yellow wire for the old amp gage to run the speedometer. Since it went to the instrument cluster already I just wired the red/yellow wire to the new Speedo. I unwrapped the the harness in the engine compartment, found the two wires, wired in a stock two wire connector and then ran it to the speedo hook up on the trans.

I was not running back up lightsso I used the backup light wire to get a firewall penetration for thetach hook up.

The bottom line is, if you take the time to understand what the PO did and how to hook everything up correctly chances are you will not need an after market harness. If your the under hood harness is that far gone there are stock replacements availible at most online vendors. Here is a link to the one availible from Mustang Depot. http://www.mustangdepot.com/OnLineCa...ght_wiring.htm
