Really Need Help
Hi Guys,
1) When my car runs for a while, the heater box will leak. It sometimes leaks anti-freeze and sometimes it looks almost like water. I was told to replace the heater core ans seals. I would like to know if rebuilding the heater is something i will be able to do myself and have good quality.
2) Has anybody had any experience with aftermarket wiring harnesses. The wires underneath my dash is really chopped up and they are draining the battery. How much would a under the dash harness cost. I have a 66 coupe with all stock electical applications.
Any help is greatly appreciated

1. replacing the heater core in a 66 mustang is a piece of cake. A simple chiltons guide, 3/8 rachet set, flat edge screw driver, razor, small bucket and flashlight (plus the new core) should be all you need.
2. invest in a ohm meter and track shorts in the system. Simply spending a large chunk of dough a new wiring harness will not solve the problem...in fact it will make it 1000% worse. I would check to confirm that your Alternator is indeed charging the battery when the car is running and then work out from there. Confrim when the key is off that the seloniod is killing power. Then check through the fuse box for open circuits.

heater's in these old car are a piece of cake. and also very cheap.for $70 at cjpony you can get a heater rebuild kit. I got one and their great! !!comes with everything you need. Part# HRK1
as for the wiring buying a kit for that is very expensive. Bout $400 for the under dash kit or you can spend bout 600 for all the wiring in the front of the car. I would try to find you short first b4 going to that extreme. GL!!

Ditto on the heater core replacement. The underdash harness is roughly 400 bucks. If the wiring is that bad, definately replace it, if it's just a couple of wires that are toast, try tracking the short(s) with an ohmmeter and/or test light and replace just those wires. Get a Ford shop manual for the car(about 40 bucks at any Mustang specific vendor)it will be well worth the money spent.
I've had good luck with aftermarket harnesses, but make sure you buy the model specific harness and get it from a reputable dealer.

If you do decide on a harness, consider the painless brand harness.
