is there a way to test my heater core to see if it has a leak with out dropping my heaterbox and removing it... i mean can i test it in dash? when i bought the car the heater was not hooked up. i know that is a good indication that it does but i want to check

I don't know of any way, I don't see a way to pressure test it. If it was unhooked, that is a real indication it was leaking. People don't diconnect them for any other reason I know of! It's not that big a deal to drop it. The box probably needs to be rebuilt anyway. For $75 or $80 you can get a new core and the foam kit to rebuild it.

There will be water collecting under it if its leaking - or is that too obvious?
