Default installing cylinderheads bolts/sealer?

i am installing my cylinderheads on my 289 block, the paper that came with the fel-pro gasketset says i should put non hardnening sealer on the bolt threads that enters the coolant passages , other bolts need some oil.... but to my idea non of the bolts goes through cooolant passages?
anyway on most bolts it looks like they had put beforea (black) sealer... so should put sealer on bolts or oil ( is the instant high temp (red) sealer the right one to put on?

thankz

The lower bolts run through coolant passages. You need to put some Permatex #2 non-hardening sealer on the threads of those bolts. Not RTV, not threadlocker, has to be Permatex #2. Easy to find at pretty much any parts store

The instructions are correct!!You need to put Permatex#2 on the coolant passage bolts which are the lower bolts.DO NOT use RTV only Permatex#2 on those bolts.Good Luck with it!![sm=signs003.gif]PS Also make sure they are torqued correctly and in the proper order!![8D]

ok thanks, but this raises another question, do i have to usethe permatex #2 alsofor the connection between cylinderhead and intake manifold ( on the coolant passages) or can that be an rtv sealeragain?

No, use a very thin bead of RTV around the intake gasket coolant ports.

i use a teflon paste for bolts that are going into water, permatex makes this type of thread sealer but its cheaper to just buy teflon pipe dope from your local hardware store and i use it on ALL headbolts to get an accurate and equal torque reading on all of em. also, use a dab of oil under the head of the bolt so its not twisting against the head dry.

uhh.. that permatex.. i see soo many sealants .... if i am right this is the one : "Permatex 80011 FORM-A-GASKET 2 " ?!

btw why is the rtv not good to use on the bolts? cause it is hardening?

we never use anything on bolts. Never had a problem with them leaking. They pull directly against the block. Studs are a different story though.
