Surface Rust (photo)
After neglecting my mustang in the rain for a few months, I have some lovely surface rust in a few cracks and crannies.
Here's a section behind the front bumper, there's also a similar spot above the front windshield.
So of course I'm in full-blown panic mode - ordered a car cover from NPD today.
Don't really have the budget to repaint these areas, so just the usual sanding + POR15 + primer gonna do the trick?

if its just surface rust like you say it is you could just sand, prime and repaint to match. shouldnt be too big of a job and unless you have some POR15 out in your garage i really dont think you would need to waste your money on it. i wouldnt really worry about it but of course where i live we have 310 days of sunshine each year and get almost no rain so rust is not really an issue for me.

You can take the car to a paint shop and have them take a picture of the paint and then they can mix some paint to match and put it in a spray can for you.
Then you take some 600/1500 grit sand paper and and use the 600 to take off the rust then use the 1500 to sand the bare metal and about 1" strip of the good paint surrounding the bare metal.
Mask off any metal rubber and use several light coats until its a nice even spray job. If there are any imperfections like rough spots or scratches or light over spray on good paint again use the 1500 to lightly remove the imperfections but dont sand through to the metal again.
If you had to use the 1500 on your paint job then youll need some medium cut rubbing compound and glaze polish like megueliers (or whatever) number 7. Then youll need applicator pads they usually come in sets of 3 (1 wool, 2 foarm) and a velcro wheel that you can chuck in a drill the pads stick to the velcro wheel and can be switch fast. These are awesome because you can use them to wax your car later and can be machine washed and used for many years.
If you can avoid sanding your paint job after your initial spray its going to cost you about 12 bucks
If you buy the cut, polish, pads (assuming you have drill or angle buffer with chuck) its about 60 bucks
Good luck

P.S if you do a good job no one will ever guess it was touched up
