Default Help Needed!!

Hey again guys!!

Still waiting for dallas mustangs to send in my timing cover...yes i know...3 weeks!! talk about back ordering!!

Anyways...i thought id start it up with the leaking timing cover..just wanted to hear it...

Before I proceed further...the gas is about 1.5 months to 2 months old..the car hasnt been run properly for that time as well....

I started it up...gave a bit of problems...connections primarily..i had painted the starter motor relay and went a bit overboard and needless to say there wasnt much contact thanks to the layer of paint..that started smoking...so i finally sanded it down...problem solved!!

Anyways...main issue..its not idling....i mean it does for 1 second and then dies down..apart from that the carbee lets out a "SPUT" and releases a bit of smoke which is petrol...dont know what happens there so anyone who could shed some light id be grateful!!

The other thing i came to notice was that the left exhaust was acting as normal....meaning it throws out condensed fuel/air/exhaust fumes till it warms up...but the right side wasnt....there were fumes coming out..you could feel it..but not as much as from the left....is this normal?

My brother reckons its because its a big engine (he has a 64 VW Type I a.k.a Beetle [&:] ) and its been standing for so long and its going to act up till u run it for atleast 10 mins.....

Waiting on you guys!!

Thanks

Step 1: check the timing. Sputtering from the carb is a backfire, so something's messed up either with the ignition timing or valve timing.

Step 2: make sure the choke is functioning and adjusted properly.

Come back to us after this

Timing is fine..

The electric choke on the other hand is not

I opened it up after noticing that it did not move AT ALL on a cold start up...the bi metallic curl inside was fine..still had tension but it wasnt moving..i checked the electricals and found out that it wasnt getting any power...I have hooked it to my alternator although the manual says dont but then i read somewhere that you can...

any advise?

Some people (including myself at one time) stated to hook the choke to the stator output. It's my recent understanding that this is not a good souurce of 12vdc all the time and it won't get the choke coil hot enough, quick enough to get it to pull off in a short amount of time. This causes your engine to run too rich after it's started and running at normal temp. This however, won't cause the 1 sec sputter you've explained. If the coke is set when you press down on the throttle then the choke spring tension is probably ok. But too much spring tension won't allow the choke pulloff to open the choke plate enough and the engine won't get enough air to go with all of the fuel. so make sure the choke mechanism is functioning correctly. Check the pull off is working by applying vacumn to it or just push it in (linkage)and put your finger over the port where the vac hose attaches. It should stay pushed in.
