help. trying to start motor
my dads motor wont start. we think it has to do with the timing. how exactly do we get it to TDC? we got it to TDC on the balancer and the rotor to #1 in the dizzy and the #1 piston is up. so could we be 180deg out or are we good? its SOOO close to starting. it cranks over and ALMOSTS starts but it wont. and every once in a while it backfires smoke out. we got all the vacuum lines hooked up so theres no leak.
It sounds like you might be 180 out.
It sounds like you are doing everything right, but you need to make sure you are on the firing stroke of #1.
Pull out the #1 spark plug, put your finger over the plug hole (block it), bump the engine untill you can feel air come past your finger, as the timing marks line up the engine will be in firing position at #1.
If your dad is used to working with chevys, keep in mind that Ford's #1 plug is on the other side of the engine from Chevy. (Chevy pass side, Ford drivers side.)

surprise!! another problem tonite. we changed the spark plug wired and the timing is fine but we think the tranny is screwed up. its freshly rebuilt and we got the motor to run but it sounds HORRIBLE! sounds like a dying bear trying to growl. you think the tranny is messed up?
no. its deff. a tranny thing. he made me get in the car and start it. it vibrates violently in the tranny hump area. so my dad is gonna tow the car up to the guy that built the tranny and make him fix it. this time it WAS NOT my dads fault. we did nothing wrong. we bolted the motor up to the tranny the right way this time and it went smoothly. that guy effed somehitng up in the tranny. it seemd fishy to me how he COMPLETELY rebuilt the whole thing in less than a day. we brought up to his shop last fiday and we got it back that afternoon....hmmm.
