LOL ... might as well really is a killer ...

i'm a bit late on this thread, but back when I was a mechanic ( I only ever worked on 4 cylinder cars) we turned the engine to 1st cylinder TDC, both valves closed. With a rug as a shielding we blew air into the hole the spark plug usually goes:
air coming out of carburator-> intake valve problem
air coming out of exhaust-> exhaust valve problem
air coming out of where you fill up the engine oil-> piston rings or piston problem

might have helped, maybe the next time.

I really feel sorry for you. there's nothing worse than trating an engine to a few niceties and as a thank you the whole thing dies.
Before you start troubleshooting anything else you're convinced for a week that you made a mistake somewhere ...
