rust prevention
Would anyone like to share what they think is the best product for rust prevention on the body of a Mustang? I got a 66 and it's all I have to drive around with in the winter, and although I don't take it out during snow, there's still the problem I have with there being water and slush splashing on the car after the snow starts to melt...any ideas on what to get to shield the metal?
Thanks!
Thanks!
When you say body are you refering to the undercarriage? If so, then I used a several layer process, which seems to be a good system to me. I used a good quality epoxy primer, primer sealer, then a single stage urethane paint. This process gives me 3 layers of protection vs. just one layer of rust preventive coating. There are truck bed liner stuff you can use that some say work really well too. I thought about using that stuff, but I've heard once that stuff is on there, it is never coming off. Any good quality coating like that would work well. I personally wouldn't use something like POR-15as it is designed to stop rust in it's tracks and protect the metal from rusting further. I used POR 15 on the insides of my frame rails, under my seat risers, torque boxes, etc, but then I used the primer, sealer, paint on my undercarriage and it is a better over-all coating to protect the metal. There is the 3M rubberized coatings too, I'm sure work well. You have to decide which best fits your application and what will make you sleep well at night.
The snow is not as bad as the slush. The slush is actually salt water from the road salt mixing with the melting snow. Another consideration is the condition of the roads. If they are rough with rock or gravel, that would be more likely to chip paint from the underside of the car, especially at higher driving speeds. An undercoating would be less likely to chip. However, if undercoating cracks, it can hold water in the damaged area. Kind of a "damned if you do- damned if you don't" situation. I live in Illinois and already planned on doing exactly what zmetalmilitia recommended.
I used a truck bedliner in my car on the floor pans and on the undercarriage and it seems to be doing a good job.... It is also pretty easy to spray considering the gun they give can be tilted in any direction. I just used the spray stuff from autozone which was pretty inexpensive.
one easier way that might not work as well:
After you get the slushy crap on your car, or when it is off of the roads or whatever. As soon as you can basically, wash off the snow/slush stuff to get the salt and chemicals off of your car.
