i dont know to much about them.. but i think the AOD kind of acts like an extra gear... which helps which fuel consumption... i would like to know if a 80's something aod tranny would fit on an older 302?

you really only need one if you have low gears and plan on highway driving. just my opinion

(yeah its the extra gear for higher speeds)

automatic overdrive

the overdrive gear in an aod is very tall. its a great ranny that allows you to run 373, 411's and run on the highway like a c4w/3.00's or whatever

An AOD is probably the cheapest option for installing an overdrive in your classic (especially if you have an automatic currently). I have one in my garage, but don't think I will ever install it due to the massive size of it (and a preference to do a T-5 swap instead). It won't work with most long-tube headers because it is so wide.

I have 3.80 gears and a C4 so highway driving is not near as nice as my 06 with an overdrive 5-speed. The AOD would be a nice upgrade on a classic as long as you don't mind working around the exhaust issues. There is a ton of information about doing the swap on the Internet.

Yea if you like a auto and drive it a lot on the highway go for it for everything to put it http://www.transmissioncenter.org/cl...conversion.htm you'll need a new driveshaft or special u joint.

its a good transmission, lasted for over 230k miles

i finally cooked it when i towed a 6,500lb tractor on a trailer that probably weighs 3k

cost me 1700 for the rebuild

The first thing I did was swap the C4 that cam with the car to an AOD that I kept from my 89 mustang. The log tube headers that came with the car, with the C4, were reused without any clearence issues. I did have to change the drive shaft and buy a new cross member but I was upgrading them anyways. I love my AOD, a stockone can take around 350HP.

I did the C4 to AOD swap and I couldn't be happier. So much better for highway, (with my c4 doing 70 on the fwy meant about 3000 rpm if I remember right, with the AOD its about 2100) and if you don't put it into overdrive you still have good power through the lower gears. I think I'm going to go waste some gas cruising it tomorrow(today if we're going to get technical).
