Need some opinions please
Hi all,
Once again, I'm trying to buy a Mustang. I found a 65 coupe I6/auto which runs and drives. It needs body work (sand/paint) but the frame/floorpan/trunk don't seem to be too bad. The guy is asking for $2500. Is that reasonable? I'm including a link with pictures of the car.

I plan to keep this car long term and convert it to a V8 some day. The body work, I will probably try to tackle myself. As well as the conversion work to get it ready for a V8. I'd appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this.
Thanks,
JT

i would....i gave that much for our stang and besides the paint being in better shape- i think that this one is in better condition.... it looks like all or most of the parts are there and i see several new items as well....offer lower and go from there.......
I don't think it is worth $2,500. The exterior surface rust is pretty bad, a lot of work to make it smooth enough for paint. I wouldn't buy a 6cy car if you want a V8. You are going to throw away everything away that is on it now. All you are buying is the shell. You can find a better shell that does not require as much body work. IMO!
THe car is going to be a total rust bucket....... Avoid it at all costs... If it were a V-8 at1/4 the cost I would say pass.
If you buy a car in that condition plan on thousands of dollars and lots and lots of time expended in rust repair.
A 6 to 8 swap is viable for a car with little or no rust, but not for this car....
Say Pass!
Look in the desert for a runner, 6 cylinder or otherwise, and drive it home.
We paid $4,000 for our 6, but we did zero rust repair....

you said it runs and drives...i see no major rust under car(but i am not lying under it)... get under there and poke at things with a screw driver and see it pushes thru anywhere or feels soft on frame rails and other areas of concern...the body looks like some peckerhead sanded it down to repaint and like a lot of people just gave up because it wasn't going fast enough or ran out of money....lowball the person and see what happens if this is the car you want.....maybe ask for help from someone in your area that knows something about stangs...if you look at the signatures of others here and read what they write you will find a lot of them have done what you want to do.....
I bought my 65V8Coupefor $2750, no exterir rust, good cowls, rebuilt V8 - 289 - the only rust repair that I have to make is the passenger floor pan. The body was in pretty darn good shape as well. I found mine on Craigslist, I just looked every day until I found the right deal.

ya, wait for a better deal. I would start with a v8 car rather than converting it later, you will save money and lots of headaches.
BTW, his claim of "runs and drives" is a pretty big longshot. the tires dont have air, there arent any brakelights... etc.

Some of that exterior rust looks bad enough to be pitted. It will be hard to get it ready for paint. The main thing is if you want a V8 that's what you should look for. I don't think its work $2500. If you really think you want to try it, offer him $500. You can probably get $500 in parts out of this one to use on the next Mustang you find. I doubt he's got people lined up with money in hand to buy this. If he says no, then fine...keep looking. You'll find what you want.
