Is the starter turning the motor? are the belts turning when you crank it? If not, it's your starter.

Could be either the starter or the flywheel/flexplate. If one or the other has damaged/missing teeth, it's going to cause a grinding sound when you try to engage the starter.

Sounds like your starter needs a tap or two from a hammer.

What sound exactly is it making? When the engagement solenoid goes out, the starter gear won't kick forward to totally engage the flywheel, and the starter and ring gear grind, but the start will still turn. You end up with a whirring sound combined with a hideous grinding.

Obviously you need a high torque mini starter it will solve all your problems.

ok that was a little tongue in cheek because of another post I just read

Sounds to me like the bendix spring went on your starter. It is easily fixed with either a replacement starter (which is how I always fix mine) or a spring that you have to install in the starter. Since you have to take the starter out anyway to do this, that is why I always opt to just buy a replacement.
