IMO use what you think best, higher temp would probably be better, but you might consider any option to paint your headers temporary to one degree or another!

I read somewhere that the header companies consider their black painted headers as more or less "painted right up to the first startup"!

I have used bar-b-que paint with moderate short term success.... No experience with any better paint...

I did exactly what you wanted to do. BIG MISTAKE!!! The paint burned off. Spend the money on a new set your much better off.

Eastwood makes a high temp header paint that is pretty good stuff. I took a old rusty set of headers, had them sand blasted, then used this stuff. They came out very nice and lasted with a good finish for several years.

You could Jet Hot Coat them, it's not cheap but it would be the best option.

I like that option, I imagine that sandblasting would go a long way toward making the paint a lot more durable by improving it's adhesion by a large degree...

Yes, freshly sandblasted, (use gloves to handle to keep the oils of your skin off the bare steel), then use a cleaner like Eastwood's PRE....then paint.

If you are going black, Barbecuer paint DOES work great, It's what I have used many times. And in most cases, it's a lot cheaper than VHT, etc.
