Long Progress Report - 65 coupe
Well, this as far the front end comes apart this time around. If the next owner (years from now) want to take the fenders off and do a total restore that's fine. At least he'll find this area is nice. The rest looks solid anyway. It is kind of like a Halloween haunted house. You work up the courage to see what's behind the next door...or in this case, the next part. I finally worked up the courage to take the battery out and look underneath. Surprise! Not bad. The battery tray is bubbled some but solid, and the metal underneath is clean and good. Not quite as good when I took out the rest of the grill and headlights and such. Most of the headlight area is good but some rust towards the center. Nothing I can't clean upor treat. One strange little hole (circled) in an otherwise clean area. Doesn't even really look like a normal rust through hole. The metal around it is good. All body parts I am taking off Ihave beentaking to metal where there was rust, otherwise just sanding the original paint. The frame rails and bumper mounts and other non-body parts have been taken to metal and primed and painted with Rustoleum stain black. They are done and ready for reassembly. The body partswill be (some already are) primed and paintedon the back and where the panels join and just primed over the exposed outer surface. Then the valances, headlight rimsand stone guards will be put back on and the whole car sanded for the final painting. This is original paint so that won't be too hard. I get prime and paint between and behind everything before the car is painted assembled (all trim, chrome, lightsand bumpers off - window glass stays in). Door jambs and trunk are good so they don't get paint. Bottom of the hood will get paint. It will be single stage paint just as original since the car is all original and I want to keep it that way. Hope I can figure out how to put this thing back together. At least I bagged and labeled all the bolts for the various parts. Thanks toeveryone here for suggesting that.
