Has anyone here installed an O2 sensor in there carbed stang? My brother says I should do it because it will be a lot easier to tune my engine with one. He is a 5.0 guy and has a lot of experience with this type of tuning.
where do I weld in the O2 sensor, in my header collector or h-pipe or ...?
My brother has the device that spits out numbers (I don't know what its called) so ill be good on that part.
Whaddya guys think?

Hiya,
all EFI have those sensors so that they know if they have to enrich the mixture or lean it.
It constantly measures in the exhaust. something like very millisecond.
Carburated engines don't have that but it's great for carb tuning. You'll know whe the carb is too lean or too rich under what circumstance.
Problem with this is it has to sit where it's really hot, so that means headers. If you have dual exhaust I guess you'll need 2 of them (not sure).
It will output a mV reading that you can try to interpret, or if you get a full set it'll have an indicator like yellow/green/red for lean/ok/rich.
From what I know you'll have to drill a hole with thread into your header(s).
supposedly they're great when tuning carbs, but I never used them on a carbed engine

Sounds like you want a A/Fsensor and not an o2 sensor. This will help, Yes. It's very simple to do. Just drill a hole in your aftermarket header or exhaust pipe at the proper length from the head as the manufacturer states and weld an o2 bung so to screw in the A/F sensor. It's a great tuning tool
If you have headers, you should be fine if you can find a spot on the collector. If you're running manifolds or shorties, install the bung into the pipe directly behind the collector. You'll need one on each bank.
I wouldn't go out of my way to buy a system to do this (they're generally pricey), but if your brother already has the tool to read them, it's not a horrible idea.

Can someone reccomend a certain sensor to go with? And I do have tri-y headers so I would be drilling into the collectors most likely, right?
i think what starfury meant is if you have headers, then the thiong should go behind where all 4 tubes go into 1. otherwise you'll be only measuring 1 cylinder. if you have no space there, right behind the header on the exhaust.
as close to the head as possible, but not on the single hose coming from head

Well I just did a little research during my lunch break and found these on Summit's site,
Oxygen Sensors
Data Acquisition i.e. a/f ratio sensors
So do I need an O2 sensor or do I want the A/F Ratio sensor? What's the difference between the two?
I'm going to find out what data collector deal my brother has installed on his car and see if I can set my car up so we can just swap the data collector back and forth between vehicles.
edit: I did a search on the forums and found this thread. Has some pretty good info I think.

O2 sensor is for EFI which you don't need with a carb. Air/Fuel meter should come with an exhaust sensor that will work in conjuction with the meter. If you are going to switch it between vehicles, you need an O2 sensor bung plug so you do not have an exhaust leak.
