Default rear drum brake help

I have a 68 with a 9" rearend and last night I wanted to check out the pads on the rear drums. Well I took the wheel and the drum off and the pads looked good. However, my buddy decided to press in the brakes when i had the drum off, and now I can not get the drum back on. I loosened the adjuster and still I can not compress the pads enough. Can anyone tell me how to get the pads compressed enough to put the drum back on?
thanks,
B

You can use a screwdriver and apply force to the brake shoes to try to compress the wheel cylinder if it hasn't been pushed out to far. If it has and is leaking fluid, or will not return, then its a good time for a new one. Send your buddy the bill.
