Default waterpump question

I was getting ready to replace the waterpump on my 67 289. I ordered a new one and pulled the old off and noticed a big difference. The old pump has the actual wheel recessed (basically you could lay the pump on a flat surface and the wheel wouldn't touch the ground) The new pump has the pumpwheel sticking out. Almost like it is the wrong one or I need some type of spacer plate to make it work. What is going on here?

Take a picture of it. I just replaced my water pump last year on my 67, it had a spacer before I put in my electric fan. Show us a pic and you'll get better service on this board.

Sounds like you bought a replacement for the OE aluminum pump which uses no backing plate (and a different timing cover). Your pump should have a steel backing plate on it. Don't know where you got it from, but they should've asked you if you had an aluminum pump or not. Go back and tell them you have a cast iron pump and want a replacement for that.

+1

The 289 used two different styles of water pumps.

The early style was an aluminum water pump with no backing plate.
I have included a picture of my new and old pump.

The later style was a cast iron pump with a backing plate. Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of the cast iron pump. The metal backing plate on the cast iron pump covers the impeller.

And yes the timing covers are different. The pumps are not interchangeable.

above statements are correct. If you absolutly want an aluminum pump go with a milodon part # mil-16230 http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...25084+1004+115

ok, i do have the iron pump on the car now. I wanted the aluminum b/c it wouldn't rust and look like crap. I didn't know there was a difference. Thanks for the clarification. I will order the cast pump and throw it on. Thanks again!!

You can get an aluminum replacement (like the one cpr recommended), just not generally from your local parts store's shelf.
