Default smoking from value covers

I'm not sure if this setup is correct, the guy at Auto zone said it is not. So here's the question. Its aRebuilt engine ( Less than 500 miles)so when I got it back from the non-name rebuilder ( retired mechanic) said it's fine. On the driver side of the value of covers is a cap breather ( were I put the oil) on the other side (passager side) is were the PVC value is at andhoes going to the of the carb plate. Its seem tobe smoking alot at the PVC inlet. I replaced the PVC value.Doesthis setup sound correct and how can I stop that side from smoking so much? Thanks.

some smoking is normal because the rings are not yet fully seated. There should not be an extreme amount though. If in doubt have another qualified mechanic check it and get their opinion. Its PCV not PVC BTW.

It seems like there are so many cars around here with PVC....it's a wonder it doesn't melt.

How much smoke? Just a little bit, like a few wisps? Or is it like a steam locomotive?

the setup itself sounds ok. what does it do when the engine is running and you pull the breather cap ?

Its starts to smoke, on both sides especially if the engine is hot. That is were it all started, I try to replace the PCV value with just a cap cover, and it started smoking alot and the engines RPM's were very high. After replacing the PCV value with a new one it all went back to normal, and a little smoke was coming from the rubber seal that the PCV value sits in, it's pretty lose.
Thanks

Well thats what you get when you buy a car with value covers and PVC. Spend some money next time and get some good valve covers and PCV.[:@]

How about something helpful?

I am a little worried about the "smoke when hot" thing. It makes me worry if it might be "steam when hot" instead.

Check your dipstick and oil cap for evidence of water in the oil. If in doubt, change your oil. If the problem persists, you may have an intake manifold sealing issue.

+1 on what JMD says
and if your car is smoking out of the valve covers like mad, then you might have trouble with your piston rings
as mentioned above, check what it does when you pull the valve cover cap when running.
if it smokes a lot, then check on compression
