Default Surface rust

As you can see from these shots, there is very light surface rust. What would you suggest to clean off the rust and protect the metal without changing originality?

Are you sure it is rust and not just 40 some years of junk? I thought the underside of my hood was pretty well covered with surface rust when I got the car. I cleaned it and it turned out there was actually very little rust. I really had to rub hard to get it clean though. I used a rather unconventional cleaner...Fantastik, you know, the kitchen stuff. It cut through the grease and tar and other junk pretty well. You could also try ordinary bug and tar remover.

Whatever you try, do a small, unoticable area first in case the results are not as you desired.

Originality is in the eye of the beholder, unless you are going to show it as a concourse car. To me, cleaning or sanding the underside of the car and repainting it with original color would still be original.

As far as protecting the underside, where and when will the car be driven? Is it still in a snow free area? Will you drive in the rain...on gravel roads? A daily driver needs more protection than a sunny day driver.

It may help once you have fixed this to put some poly plastic under the car when parked for long periods of time (even on concrete). This prevents mosture from rising to the underside of the car and may help protect it. A good cleaning will tell you more. Fantastic and a brush works great. If rusty then, some phosporic acid followed by paint or primer will do the trick.POR works OK also, but once used its hard to get other finishes to stick.

I use a product called captn lee's for surface rust removal. It is an acid and will remove the rust fairly easily. then you just scuff and use you covering of choice.

rust mort is a rust converter. It will turn the rusty area a black or dark brown color. I usually sand the rust off then either wipe on or spray with a water bottle on the surface to kill any residual rust.
