Need help with Emissions Test
Hello All,
Took my car yesterday to get the emissions test done and failed the idle part. CO was 7.94 and the max is 6.0. That's the only part I failed. Everything else was well within limits. What needs adjusting? My first guess is carb idle mixture needs to be leaned a little?
Thanks,

Where on earth do you live that you need to get emissions testing? I live in CA, the most highly smog restricted state, and I don't have to get my car smog tested (yet).
i can't believe they failed you for that as idle mixture should be an easy fix.
on all carbs you have 2 screws for that (idle mixture screws), i'm pretty sure you know them
Turn them in by half turn (both) and that should do. the engineer could have done it quickly to see if that is it already ...
But there is _NO_ way to tell for certain.
Without measuring while adjusting you won't know so you might have to bring it to a garage for them to adjust and measure.

Kalli - That's what happens when you show up at a place right before quitting time. They're in a rush to get the doors closed and customer service moves way down on the priority list. I thin next time I'll carry the screwdriver with me and do it myself.

Move from Utah, that's what I would do. Holy cow, 68 and up. Ridiculous.

That's ridiculous on the emissions. I live in missouri and no car made before 1995 has to be tested. It's nice, my daily driver cansound exactly how i like it to sound
. but it can smell bad with a bad fuel mix.

You should tell them you'll only take it if you can pass the emissions tests of 1967
. That's just plain ridiculous. Cars were not made to pass emissions. They run on carburetors, for one, with an extremely inaccurate way of checking. This is one of those "write your congressman" type of deals. I can understand the late 70s to 80s, but 68 is just plain near crazy

Yeah, I think it's a load of bull, too, but the air can get pretty foul around here when there's no wind blowing to push things out so I can understand the reason. I just don't really understand how they came up with the year. I mean, there's really no difference engine wise between a 67 and 68 or even some years later. I guess they had to draw the line somewhere. It's really not a problem as long as things are set right. I passed it last year with crappy heads and a carb that needed rebuilt. All of that has been fixed since my last inspection so it shouldn't have been any problem at all this year. Hindsight says I should have told the shop to put it on an emissions testing machine when they were adjusting the carb after the rebuild. I suppose they may have, though, because I do like to tinker under the hood and there's no telling when I turned a screw here or there to throw things off a little. Now if I could just remember which screw I turned.
