vin #?
Hey,
I traded an old rx7 for a mustang from a friend of mine and he said that it was a 64. But I want to verify the year before I start to buy parts. The stang is just a shell with no interior or drivetrain. Where canI find the vin number on this thing? I looked on the dash and on the firewall but did not see anything there. Also looked on the driver's door and there is not one there either. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Ford did not make a 64. The first year of production was 65 but there are "64.5" mustangs because the very early production 65's were different then the ones actually made in 65 and later. The VIN number and Warranty number should be on a tag inside the driver door (at least it is that way on a 66) but it will have the VIN stamped on the driver side inner fender. once you find that go to this website to decode your vin:

Good luck with the resto!!! welcome to the forums!

Here's a shot of Penny Hardaway's car off of ebay. The VIN is visable towards the lower right corner of the picture. Even though you're an artist and not a professional basketball player your car should have a number in the same spot.
aye. decode the VIN to make sure.
if nothing was changed then those things usually give it away:
it's got a generator instead of alternator (the instrument cluster should say "GEN" instead of "ALT" at the idot light)
massive horns mounted on the bracket just behind radiator
and the brake light switch is on the master cylinder
the VIN: (copy/paste ... )
Ford did have a shutdown period for retooling of the Mustang lines in early August, 1964. This is when the switch from generators to alternators was made. When they started back up, the VIN numbers were rounded up to 5FXXX250001 at Dearborn, and 5RXXX125001 at San Jose. To those of us in the hobby, this is the point when the 64.5's ended and the 65's started.
