Help with PO engine swap
Hi All
I'm new to the forum, and new to mustangs in general. I bought a project 1967 mustang a few months ago. The PO had swapped in a 1995 mustang 302. He scrapped all the FI and put on the original 289 intake and some junker Holley four barrel (looks like the one from a late 70's 460 in my bro-in-laws truck). He also put on the 289 timing chain and cover and all the old accessories, and hooked up the old C4 as is. He couldn't getthe new motorto run so I bought it fairly cheap. I changed the firing order to match the modern 302 instead of the old 289 and it fired up and ran well for a maybe 50 miles before I lost forward gears in the C4 (no surprise).
So, I got some friends to rebuild the C4last weekend but now I've figured out that I've got a 28oz flexplate and harmonic damper to go with the 50 oz crank in my 302 (assuming the PO didn't swap the crank or modify the damper, and considering he didn't know the right firing order on the 302I think that's a safe bet). I've got a new flex plate but am looking for a damper. A new one is $125 to $150.
Does anybody know a junkyard combo damper / v-belt pulley that will line up on my 67? I know it's a crap shoot with all the combos possible, but I figure it's a common swap so maybe there's a secret recipe? My goal is to get the car running reliably as reasonably as possible, I'm not trying to do a full restoration.
Also, I've figured out that to correct this swap I need
[ul][*]50oz flexplate with 157 teeth to replace my 28oz flexplate with 160 teeth[*]50oz harmonic balancer set up for V-belt pulley[*]new steeldistributor gear to match the new cam gear[/ul]
Is there something else obvious I'm missing? I have a bunch of other little stuff to fix (I'll be posting more later) but I'd like to have the engine swap correct before moving on. Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken ford changed to the 50 oz in 1983 any 302 after that will work no matter what kind of vehicle its in. Happy junkyard searching. try summit or jegs for the dist. gear. I'm guessing the PO changed the oil pan too other wise it wouldn't clear the centerlink.
It's a four bolt pulley from a 69 or later 302.
Do not use the 289 items.
I look for these sets everytime I'm in the junk yard.
Single groove pullies. No power steering. The water pump hose is on the driverside unlike the 289 so the radiator needs to be reworked or replaced to match the lower hose.
I'd get the 302 timing cover and pointer also.

The Damper. Grab one from a junkyard Crown Victoria (85 up 5.0)
Do not use one for a 94-95 Mustang nos or used. They are defective from the factory and need to be replaced anyway. Be glad you did not recieve it from the PO!

Thanks for the info guys. The pictures really helped.
The car is running now with the 289 timing cover and water pump, it's just going to shake itself apart with the 28oz weights. It is a three bolt pulley, so I need to find a four bolt pulley and later model 50 oz harmonic balancer. My pulley also has an extra groove for thepower steering pump that's missing but I plan to put another one on. I think my options are to find a 50 oz balancer/pulley combo (guess I'll start looking fora 85 crown vic) or buy a $125 3 bolt 50 oz balancer from damper dudes and use my current pully. Any excuse to get to the junk yard, though
I found the distributor I want, too. 1985 mustang GT manual transmission used the Duraspark II with steel gear. I have points now, so I may as well upgrade. The steel gear alonecosts about $40, whena new distributor is around $50. I'll pull the ignition module and coil from the junk yard and drop in a new distributor, get my steel gear and get electronic ignition, too.
Just got the driveline reworked today, too. $87 for new ujoints, straightened and balanced. I sure hope this all turns out in a smooth running car.
