Default RE: Yet another dumb question

I'd put in the engine and tranny combo, with the headers laying loosly in the engine bay. Before connecting up the motor mounts, attach the headers with the engine still supported by the hoist. Then put in the tranny crossmember and connect up the motor mounts.
Spot on. The best possible way to do this.
Just one tip though, get header gaskets that have the "hooks" on the outer two bolt positions. This allows you to loosly bolt the headers in placewith justthose two outer bolts, and simply drop the gasket down between the header and head, and it will sit on the bolts and be perfectly aligned for the rest of the bolts.Much mucheasier that trying to align the gasket and the headers to the head.
One other thing. make sure you header flanges are nice and flat. if they seem to be warped or have high spots, file them flat before you do your install. It will save you the heartach of leaks later.
