Default I finally got one!

After 20+ years of wanting a Mustang, I got a 68 J-Code coupe. I bought the one that I had an earlier post about (Craigslist). She definitely looked a lot better in the Craigslist post! But that's ok. I wanted a project car and that's what I got. I'm happy with her. Thanks for the advice for those who posted it; you guys are great!

As for her condition, well, I'll just say I discovered a few more "issues" after I got her home. I went over it as best as I could and took a mechanic friend with me to check her out.

Here's the bad:

- Rear passenger quarter panel is shot (I saw that)
- Front torque boxes are shot (I saw that)
- I'm not sure what they are called, but the part of the frame rail underneath the body and welded to the torque box is rusted (not all the way through)
- Driver side firewall or floorpan area (above the pedals)is rusted but not through.
- Driver side cowl leaks a little
- Brakes do not work. I think I made it worse than it was after I brough it home though.
- The original 302 is out of the car and 4 hours away.

The goods :

- The engine runs (after 30 mins of coaxing though) and it now idles/revs smoothly.
- The rest of the body panels seem to be in good shape.
- The rest of the frame rails are solid.
- The passenger side entire floor pan is solid as well as the rest of the driver side minus the area near the firewall.
- The interior is ok. Some wires are dangling around but everything seems to work.
- It comes with another C4 and some misc. parts, but that too is 4 hours away.
- Most of the electrical stuff is working.
- Doesn't seem to be any leaks from the engine/water pump/radiator/gas tank.

Once again thanks to all help!

Wow, congratulations! It would be wise to ****** up those parts that are 4 hours away, fast. Especially if its the original block.

Thanks. I probably will. The guy who has the parts in NJ (the seller's dad) said he knew the C4 he had was the original one and was "pretty" sure the 302 was original although he could not find the block#(?) to confirm it.

My debate is whether it is worth it to spend $250+ in gas and a trailer to pick it up if it's not the original motor. Is having the original C4 worth it? (Sorry I'm a n00b about this!). He also had some other steel wheels and misc. parts that came with my Mustang when he bought it.

My advice: get all the extra parts. Its a gamble but if its the original block and is still usable then that will increase the value of your car. When I bought my car it had the original transmission and intake manifold in the trunk [still there]. If I want to put everything back to original, the parts are there.

Definetily worth getting those parts, especially if they're the originals. Looks like you got yourself a good project, good luck with it.

Congrats!!!

Looks like you have a fun resto before you. I would definitely get the other parts, even if they are not original. Depending on where you live, you could prolly sell that 302 for around $250 if worst comes to worst.

Congrats! Spent the gas and go get all the additional parts. 250.00 bucks for that stuff and even if you didn't want it ebay/craigslist/local paper, etc it off. You'll get your money back if you decide not to use it. As for it being the original motor.. are toy restoring it or making it your own.. restomodding it? Having the original is nice but its meaningless in a restomod and really only ups the value if its a really good restoration and show car.

I say have fun with it and make it your own! Congrats again! [sm=icon_rock.gif]
