Default Upgrade to 428

I am a newby. I currently have a 1966 coupe, 289 automatic. I want to start a new project, it is a long cold winter in Michigan. I am thinking about dropping a 428, 429 or 460into a early 70's fastback I have my eye on. (Scotty, give her all she'll take!)

Any sites I should visit to get a handle on what I am getting into?

I figure I need to put a beefy suspension in the front or will the standard front suspension handle it?

Are these three engines the same with just different heads or are they different beasts.

Thanks,

Texasinmi

You will need to modify the car pretty heavily. I would not think the stock suspension could handle it, and I would suggest upgrading it. Just curious, why do you want to put a big block in? If its power you want you can make lots of power out of a small block.

Welcome to the forum, and good luck with your project!

Yeah, build a 351W stroker like a 408, it can make as much power as a BB but weighs a lot less and fits a lot easier.

no need for a BB if your looking for power. small blocks are just fine. stroker is the best way to go for monster powers. a BB requires the whole front of the mustang to be modded and rebuilt.

can you say forced induction boss 302 block? can you say 8 second 1320's?

70 model mustangs had the big block (FE) motors as an option so its not a big deal putting it in there. Just motor mounts and transmition I believe. You can also do a stroker FE 514 is an easy one no extra mechine work needed.

Small block stroker, its the way to go! Big block can be done, but its a lot of extra work. A 428 is an FE block, just like a 360, 390, and the 427. They are all very similar, just different bores/strokes. These engines have a bell housing bolt pattern unique to this family only. The 429 and 460s are also in a family of their own (both in same family). And like the FE, they have their own special bell housing. Either way, a tranny swap is in order to put in any of these engines. If you build a small block stroker, you can keep the stock trans, and just build it to take the power.

if i were you i would do a 408 stroker, i have a 351C in my 69 and while its not a big block, its a PITA to do things like change spark plugs, i actually have to get my little brother too tighten up the 2,3,6,7 plugs cause my hands tooo big too fit

but at the same time its awesome to say "yea, its got a big block!"

A 429/460 can be a power house with enough money

Springs, mounts, and the shock towers may need to be plated, other than that, if the tranny fits, not too much to it. It will be a straight liner though...... Line it up and hope it stays their. On the plugs, its usually takes about 1 to 2 hours on a 68 with a 428. A fine tooth ratchet (the others will not work) and a foot of rubber hose is needed, not to mentiona lot of patience. The additionof aluminum heads and intake will shed a lot of pounds over the steel. Sticking the battery in thetrunk also helps.Stroke a 429/460 to over 500CI, now you have a real torque machine. I will take torque over horsepower anyday.Size matters.
