Need help!! with 65 steering bad!
Need help!!Ok I went from classic to new back to classic. Yesterday, I went and picked up a 65 coupe about a hundred miles away. I bought it for my wife coming home present from Iraq. The car runs great (will post pics in a day or two) but it is the WORST handling car I have ever driven. I have driven fast cars my whole life, and this is the first time I ever feared for my life. At highway speed it was ALL over the road. It had a lot of play in the wheel, which is understandable at its age but the whole front end was just floating all over the place. I know this model is also bad about bumpsteer as well. Any way long story short my wife will be home in two months (we hope). I have to have it ready to drive by then. What do I need to change/ add, to get the play out of the wheel, and get rid of the floating side to side. Basically I want it to steer like new when I’m done. The prev owner said he just replaced the shocks, springs and leafs. I don’t want to replace parts by ones and twos chasing a bigger problem around. What should I do??? Thanks much!!
I had the same problem with my 67 mustang and I can agree to your statement about fearing for your life because the car is all over the road....The upper and lower control arms are probably shot, your tie rods are probably shot, your idler arms is probably shot and all need to be replaced not to mention getting a new alignment on the car when done.
you need to pick up a master suspension kit. and maybe a steering box rebuild kit. also if you want to give it a new car feel rebuild the front suspension and add a steering rack instead of the old style setup with a center link and tie rods etc.
laurel mountain has a pretty decent deal on there suspension parts they also have a master stock rebuild kit for around 800$
heres a link to the suspension page http://www.laurelmountainmustang.com/index-1024.htm

If you want it to steer the way it did when it was new you need to do as Josupait said. If you want it to steer like a new car these days you need to do as rmodel65 says and replace the type of steering. Even new, these cars had play in the steering wheel.
