I'm not sure about a 69... I had a guy come to the body shop and install mine (65 mustang). All glass had to be out. It took him 3 hours and a lot of skill.. Well worth the $100 that I paid..

What year is your car? the front and rear window SHOUlD be out of the car, but it can be rigged up without depending on what car you have. However the way it is supposed to be done is with the windows out, and it will look the best that way. I did the headliner on my car, took me like a day being very careful. came out flawless though, and worth being able to say I did it myself.

GLASS OUT OF OUR 65 COUPE WHEN NEW HEAD LINER INSTALLED BUT I WATCH THE SAME GUY THAT DID MINE INSTALL ONE WITH GLASS IN AND YOU COULD NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE. BUT HE HAS 35 YEARS OF DOING THIS AND EVEN HE SAID IT IS BEST WITH GLASS OUT.

I've never installed a headliner...will be later on though. I did take mine out of my '69 a couple of days ago.....I really don't see why the glass would have to be out at all. There was a trim piece at the front that cover the edge of the headliner. Just my thoughts...let us know what you end up doing though. If the glass really does need to be out that is a good thing for me to know now.

Regardless of the year, replacing the headliner in a fastback is easier than a coupe due to the fact that you don't have to deal with it down the sides as these areas are covered by panels. Regardless of having a glue-in window, I think it would still be much easier to do it in a '69 with the glass out so that you can get a better angle to pull on it and get it in place.

I did my '65 fastback with the glass out and it came out perfect. It probably took me twice as long as it would for a pro, but like David said, there is a definite satisfaction of doing it yourself. My advice is to go ahead and give it a stab (or two) as headliners are cheap and can be pulled back out if it doesn't turn out well.

Good luck!

I haven't done the headliner in mine yet and quite some time till I'll get to it. However, everyone says its so difficult to install them. I just don't see it! I mean yeah ok.. Its a pain in the *** without question, takes times, patience, a lot of care, butt loads of cursing of course and one deals with a killer of a backache the next day sure.

But really.. is it all that HARD to do? I plan on doing our 67 coupe myself and looking forward to doing this most difficult of tasks when its time!

I say Do It Yourself!

i did the headliner in mine. it wasnt that tough, but what you want to make sure you do, is mark where the rods are, when you cut your old one out............. you need to at least push the windows part of the way out, as the headliner needs to go underneath the rubber seal, which may, or many not be,...........hard, and or cracked. i replaced my rubbers when i did mine, so i took them all the way out. othyerwise, you have to just put a lot of window sealer/gasket sealer around the outside, or it will leak when you are finished. if you can get it done for 100, it's probably worth it,.............if it's a lot more then that, i'd do it myself. it's a lot of back bending, etc..........but it looks good in there when you are done, and you can tell people you did it yourself! choice is yours. it's not too tough though,..........
it's not rocket science. hope that helps!

I did it in my 69 with the windows out... it is way easier. You can rig it up to do it without removing the windows, as you can tuck it into the weatherstripping in the back and there is a metal plate running along the front it can go behind. However the best and right way to do it is with the windows out, much easier too.
