Default toploader conversion from C4

I hope to get started on the engine install today or tomorrow. My toploader has the Hurst shifter and linkage. Going from a C4 car to a toploader, will I have to trim the tunnel for the shifter?

I guess we have been lucky the last three weeks or so. It's been warming up and a majority of the snow is gone. I love global warming. I have already done the swap. I just need to mount the slave cylinder and install the engine. I am waiting for a slide back as we speak. As soon as my car gets to the shop where the engine is we can start.

I wish there was a better shifter than the Hurst available. The thing rattles like crazy, is too tall with too much travel, and large in the tunnel.
I had to open a hole in my Fairlane. The junk Cougar I got the tranny from had a 8" X 8" section of the tunnel cut away for clearance.
Never had one in a Mustang.

[align=left]I was looking at some pics of toploaders while trying to find pics of slave cylinder mounts. I noticed this one is mounted way up there compared to mine which is mounted on the tail housing. What's the difference? Is the one pictured for a comet or fairlane?

It depends on the shifter. My Hurst required me to cut the tunnel for the shifter to clear, and do some "shaping" of the linkage and tunnel so the linkage rails would clear. It doesn't rattle, it shifts very positively and crisply, and is a short throw. They make quite a few different shifters for the Toploader, so it depends on which one you get.

Here is a photo of the 4-speed toploader and Hurst Comp shifter I bought last month 02.02.08. Its still got its original tag which shows: RUG E 2. This decodes as a Wide Ratio used on 67/68 mustangs with 289 and 302 engines. I've got it pretty much ripped apart and boxed till I'm ready for its install.

I've done some measurements and don't think I'll have to cut the tunnel at all. We'll see when install times comes around though.
