look under the car @ the front floor boards for rust small amounts is normal.
I looked at a 65 for my nephew last week and the floor was gone! Just carpet was all that was there.
Also the rear end was covered in grease. Once he drove it the vibration led me to think it was shot.
Good luck take it to a mech unless you know what to look for yourself.
Factor in the cost to have it checked out in the price.

If you are planning on a restoration you are probably already figuring some amount of rust. Body rust is body rust and does not vary much from car to car but Mustangs havbe a few special places to look. cmanf is right about looking at the floors. Pull up some carpet front and back to check the inside of the floor. That means pulling the back seat out (it just lifts right out when you pull up on it). The cowl is another Mustang problem area. Pour some water down the cowl vent in front of the windshield and check to see if it drips inside under the dash near the sides. I used a half gallon on each side of mine. If it does drip the cowl is rusted out and in addition to being a major job in itself that probably also has damaged the floors. The bottom of the shock towers is also a good place to check and the floor of the trunk on either side of the gas tank. The rocker panels inside and out are important as this is structural on a Mustang. As a unibody car they are pretty much held together with the frame rails, floors and rockers. If it has the original steering some play in the steering wheel is normal. With original manual drum brakes having to stand on the pedal to get stopped is also pretty much normal.

Just for fun! I have never done one, but have always wanted too. I have owned Mustangs my whole life but never had a first generation. No hurry to get it done either. Just would like to be able to do one before I die.
