Default Installing axle seals..

How would you suggest installing new axle seals? Perhaps an easy question, but I'm considering using a 2" socket or something similar and a hammer to beat it in evenly.

Also, I need to buy new axles. Im considering a set of 31 spline Mosers with bearings and retaining plate already installed for 400$.This seems like a good deal, but anyone know of any other quality axles for that price or less?

Thanks all
Nic

That's the way I put them in.

Unless you have 31 spline differential, you can't use 31 spline axles.

be very careful pulling your old seals. you don't want to scratch/blemish the face. I paid ashop to hot-tank my rear end, and when they pulled the seals they scratched up the face. (two seals later) J-B weld does great to fill in deepscratches, anda good file helps to resurface. You can pick up a seal install kit from harbor freight for about $20, it includes a multitude of sizes up to 3" or 4".

I've pulled 100 of them and never seen the seat for the seal get scratched.

Lots of mechs have installed seals that way for years. (that's the waythe "old timers"taught most of us back in the day) The seal installer at Harbor freight is also a very good idea but 20 bucks is kind of pricey if your not going to use itall the time. I also use a very thin coating of silicone sealer around the seal'smetal housing perimeterto seal up any possibility of oil leakage. good luck.

Thanks, this is a one time deal so I dont think I need a kit for it. The old ones were a pain in the butt to get out. I bought a seal puller and it wouldnt budge. I eventuallyput a bearing puller on a 5lb slide hammer to remove it. I didnt see any gouges on the face, so should be good.

Good idea on the silicone.

I had the housing sandblasted and painted it myself, looking good so far.

Autozone has a seal driver kit that has the exact size you need. It's a free rental.
