Default why are manual 289s so hard to find?

I've been searching daily all over California for the past 2 months. My only requierments, original 289, manual tranny, some work that needs to be done to the car. I would say 1 out of every 100 cars I find fill that criteria, and usually that one car has some problem that keeps me from getting it. In the past week, I decided to commit to the year 1967, so finding a 1967 289 with a manual tranny has proven impossible. Why is it so hard to find stick shift mustangs?

So, I'm thinking of giving up the search and just getting an 67 automatic 289, and one day converting it. I've seen posts on this forum explaining the conversion process from a high level, but does anyone have detailed information? A "how to" guide? Would I have to weld a cross member or support to the frame or anything complicated like that? Or is it pretty much a bolt on process after I get all the right parts?

So, I decided to get the 1967 becuase I would like to put the e-kit on it. I know most people don't like those kits, but maybe you might know the answer to this question... is the 67 the only year that will fit the front grille and lower apron (where the fog lights go) from the elenore body kit?

If you really want a stick don't settle for an auto. You'll be kicking yourself later. Be patient, they're out there.

I began searching for a 1967 Mustang with the same things you are looking for: original 289 motor, original manual transmission, and in good condition. I looked for several months in Texas and finally found one but it had more rust than I wanted. I purchased it because I did not know when I would run into another one.

My car is a C-code and the Marti report I ordered states their are 40,211 with the motor/transmission (3spd) combination on my car. I believe there were about 475,000 67 Mustangs which would mean less than10% came with a C-code and 3spd manual transmission. There are probably about the same amount with the A-code but I don't know.

Oxnard Montalvo, why do you say I would be kicking myself in the future if I mod to a stick as opposed to buying one from the start?

I am using Craigslist and Craigshelper (craigshelper lets you search all of california without having to go through each city on the craigslist homescreen). btw, I was looking for a coupe, not a fastback. Thanks for the cars.com link, I'll look there as well.

67txstang, why were you not willing to get an auto and convert to a manual?

I looked at a few Mustangs with an automatic and considered purchasing one and converting it to a T5. I read a few articles and researched the prices of the conversion. To buy parts I would be confortable using, I guessed it would cost me near $1,000.

I don't have the money to buy restored vehicle. I was realistic and understood there would be so many other things which would take priority over replacing a functional transmission. Additionally, I really wanted an original car and replacing the transmission was just an exception I found myself making to get a car rather than the one I wanted.

You'd be kicking yourself because it's not really what you want. Give yourself another month or so and keep looking.

I spent 7 months looking for our 67.. finally found one that I pretty much stole and didn't care about adding a few things myself... wife wanted a 4-speed but it had a C4 auto, etc. Found a complete 4-speed toploader, Hurst Comp shifter, linkage, clutch/brake assembly, etc.. everything, on Craigslist for 450.00. So whats my point? If your looking at having a complete restoration and body kit installed then spending some time looking for a manual trany and having it installed isn't gonna make that much of a difference in the end. Just keep looking for deals and what you want. Post on Craigslist "WTB: 4-speed toploader" or 5/6-speed, whatever. I get on average 12 or so emails within 2 days from people wanting to sell me their stuff. Some I ignore and others I politely laugh at and a few I reply to for more info and a phone number. eBay prices are inflated way to high most of the time however you can still find a deal now and then.

As for the E-Kit.. It'll fit both a 67 and a 68 as its basically the same car. Its a lot of work! I like the E-Kits but thats about it.. wouldn't have done it to ours. Instead we went the Shelby route and doing a semi clone of the 68 Shelby experimental car called the Green Hornet... just without the 428 and the IRS. Have fun!
