Default Car Alarms

So I'm wanting to bring my stang up to where I'm working until school starts again next semester. I've talked to a few guys at work and they say that the vandalism around town is pretty bad. If I do bring my car up it won't be left outside overnight, but for the times when I do have it parked around back of my apartment where I can't see it I'd like to have an alarm that has one of those transmitter key chain things that lets you know if your car has been broken into.

The alarm I have now was like $20 and works ok, but it's definitly not good enough to seriously protect my baby. So what brand and model of car alarm do you guys have installed or what would you recommend. I'd rather not spend over $200 on one, but if it's neccesary I can afford it right now. Thanks!

This is the alarm I have used on most of cars (3 different cars, none stolen or broken into) The one that didnt have the alarm was broken into twice and trashed once, stereo stolen twice... I have never had the remote notify, because it is pretty expensive. But you can get a very good Viper alarm for $100-200 and install it yourself or get one installed for $350 with plenty of kill switches and sensors. The "notify" is several hunderd dollars more... it would be nice but its usually overkill unless you are living in the hood.

Good luck.

The Club is also a good visual deterrent for lazy or stupid thieves. I also have a backup battery kill switch that I flip every time I leave the car, starter kill with the alarm, bump sensor, flashing blue LED in the car, heavy duty lock on the hood, locking lug nuts... you name it. .357 as a last resort.

No one is taking my car!!! [sm=shootshoot.gif]

EDIT: I think it's more than worth it to take it to a reputable shop, get a quote you are satisfied with and haved an alarm professionally installed.

IMO whichever one you choose, whatever you pay, count on it lasting for about 18 months...

In my experience, aside from most audio components, consumer electronics for cars pretty much sucks as far asreliability goes.....

The Viper alarms I have had have lasted for many years. I had one on a Ford Ranger that lasted for the final 8 years of ownership in my family. I dont have much faith in consumer electronics but I have been very satisfied with my Viper alarms.

If you want more options, I recommend going to an audio and alarm shop and see what they have available.

I was just reading an owners manual on a viper alarm and it said that that alarm only works with fuel injected/automatic vehicles. Would I be able to make it work with my carbed car? Would I just lose some of the features of that alarm?

I had a viper on my mustang when I bought it, but chose to take it out because it was installed wrong. I think viper is one of the best known names and should be pretty good. Another thing you could look in to, I have never seen one, but a friend was telling me about it. Evidently you can buy a thing that will call/text your cell phone when there is a problem with your car. That would work for me cuz my cell is with me at all times.

Also, you should think about some "visual deterrents" like alarm stickers, a steering wheel lock, flashing led on the dash, etc.

To the best of my knowledge, the only feature that a carbed car will not be able to utilize is "remote start"...
I know my Mustang, which is def a carbed car... needs a pump on the gas when cold starting... and you cant do that with a remote. EFI is different.
But you can still have starter kill, door, trunk and hood sensors, impact sensors, tilt/raise/lower sensors (to protect your rims or getting the car jacked up for any reason), glass break sensors, motion field sensors for inside and outside the vehicle (so you can leave your windows open and if someone reaches inside, it will chirp several times and go off a second or two later...

My alarm module is a really basic one:
http://www.viper.com/Products/Produc...?ProductID=110
I have door, trunk, hood, glass break, impact sensors, tilt/raise... all tied into the starter kill. The LED flashes on the dash when the alarm is activated. There are no motion sensors on this car because I do not have a headliner installed right now and the sensor needs to be ouside of the headliner.

I feel like a Viper sales rep...hope this info is helping you some.
