Disc Brake install ROADBLOCKS... Rusted hub... please help.... Thanks!!!
Okay first and foremost...
Doing Mustang Steves 08 GT front swap....
My drivers side swap has gone quite smoothly so far. But I ran into a hitch with the passenger side. The drum came off with the hub attached after some serious tugging and coaxing... Seems like it might have been rusted a bit. And the hub seems to be rusted into the drum enough that at first I thought it was one piece. The local parts shop doesnt have the hub in stock so I need to try to get this hub detached from the drum. So far banging and prying has not worked. Should I try something to loosen the rust or will that compromise the integrity of the hub?
Please let me know if you have any ideas because the car is apart and I want to keep going on this today. Thanks for your time!!!
I also have a few quick questions you may have easy answers for.
1) The rotors I have from Mustang Steve are pretty clean but there are a few rust spots and dirt on the rotor surface. I was thinking of using steel wool... Is that a bad idea? Seems like I should have the rotors looking as clean as possible when they are first installed.
2) Beneath the center cap in the hub, (hope that makes sense)... after I took out the cotter pin and all that... There is a lot of black grease in there. Should I load it up with grease again at some point before bolting the hub & rotor back on? or afterward? Any specific recommendations?

All right I am going to take the hub/drum to a machine shop here and hope they can press em apart. ...crossing my fingers....
I would clean and repack all the bearings. Put alittle grease in the hub and on the races. Pack the bearings untill yuo have clean grease coming out. Good luck.............
you could try soaking the hub piece that you want apart in a weak acid.even white vinigar works!. it will break apart the rust and make just able towipe off with a wire brush or somthing.
The hub and the drum are pressed together. If you punch out the studs, which you can do at home, they will come right apart. Either use a brass punch so you don't mess up the treads or put an old lug nut on the stud and smack it with a BFH. Either that or replace the studs.
