Default Headers and Exhaust

Hey, new to these forums and looking for some help on exhaust systems for a 351 winsor. Currently it sits with a 2 brrl carb and a mear stock engine. After looking around I am a little confused as to which headers to buy, and pose a couple problems. Which ones best fit a 69 mustang? And also after installing, its already a pain to get to the spark plugs and I am worried that after installation it may impossible to access?

Looking for some help, from those that have installed and done this...

So far I have found two setups, one includes the pipe and muffs, but would have to buy headers seperate:

And this the header kit from summit:

What do you think about this?

Does anybody else have any idea? I am looking to spend no more then roughly 450 on everything. Headers, muff, pipe etc. If anybody has any setups for this price or if you could even a like list. Please, a little unknowing of a 69. I want a nice rich sound and good performance. Have been using jcwhitney and summit racing.

Thanks alot!

there's sound clips for mufflers in the FAQ

I prefer tri-y style headers over longtubes for a street car. Better torque in the mid range, generally accepted as better for fuel efficiency. Less hp gain at the top end. Thats why you often see tri-ys on opentrack cars and longtubes on drag cars.

I think your budget is a little too conservative for what you want to achieve. And with a stock 2bbl engine you will barely notice a performance improvement. So if it were me I would park the header idea for now. A cheap performance upgrade would be to change rear gearing (depending what ratio is in it now).

If you just want a good sound and not likely to make performance upgrades to the engine any time soon, just go to an exhaust shop and geta twin system with a balance (H) pipefitted up from the stock manifolds back. You can talk direct with the guy about the sound you want and you have someone to go back to if there is an issue.

Just a word of warning tho...big hp, big revving engines make any exhaust system sound good. Kinda like reallyfine looking girls can wear an old flour sack and still look hot. If it is stock, it will never sound as good as that hotted up whatever you heard launch at the lights last night. To get closer to that sound with what you've got, IMO go smaller pipes not bigger. Smaller pipes create faster exhaust gas velocity and makes a crisper sound. 2" x 2 pipes is plenty for that engine.

There was a post on kit versus shop installed exhaust a while back and the overall consensus was go to a shop unless you had the skills and tools to do the refit of the kit yourself (as they never quite line up like they say they will[8D])

good luck with your choices

The hot ticket these days, rather than an H pipe is called an X pipe. Summit has a "kit" for this which has the pipes "siamesed" together for absolute minimum loss and maximum sharing of the two muffers. I'm told this picks up a couple HP as well. This is what I've got planned for my pony this summer.

I agree with Aussie about your budget. I have had good luck with Hooker Headers. I am putting a fulllength set on my 69. One thing to look for before you order anything. Check to see if they will work with your type of tranny, brakes, and steering. There is not much room in there and some headers will not work with all combinations. Another thing to think about is ceramic coating. It will last for many years. Others will rust.

Now my rant. I am not a fan of exhaust restriction. For that reason, I use full length headers and 3" dual exhaust for my 450+ stroker. Why do you want to put a restriction inyourexhast flow with something like shorties? They are better than manifolds, I agree and give you more ground clearance than full tubes. For those reasons they are a compromise, but for performanceminded peolple, full size headers are the way to go. Same with exhaust pipe. If you run a single pipe use 3". If you are doing true duals, use 2.5". 2.25" is small if you want to do anything to it later.

Just remember Beverly Hills Cop and the banana in the tail pipe. There is a reason NASCAR and NHRA guys use big diameter zoomies. Compromise if you must, but know that a poorly fitting exhaust will kill your performance.

Here is a thread that talks about the myth of back pressure.

thats a great article urb, and I agree with you for your application.

And yes, if you have a750some hp, high revving engine likeNascar that sits up around 8000-9000rpm all day, you want long tubes and seriouslybig pipes.

if you have a 220hp 351 that will rarely find 5000rpm, you have to compromise as the article says. If he goes tri-y (not shorties) and 2x2" he will sound good and gain a marginal performance gain.

If he goes 2x 2.5 or3.0 on the end of longtubes he will have a measurable drop in performance and sound like2 giant ricer fart cans
