Default 289 hipo/289 differences

Hey guys, I am looking for a 289 hipo, but have had no luck in my region(missouri). I'm going to be dropping it into my 71 sportsroof, as the 351c is out for rebuild, and i intend to return it to stock, as it is all #'s matching.

To the point. As far as i have found out the difference between 289 hipo, and 289 is distr/heads/crank/hd rods/main caps. This correct? And, also, what is the next best option for the route of 289. I am moving from missouri, to pheonix in sept, so i need something that will handle a long drive, and still make enough power to move the land yacht(71 mustang)the distance.

I have found a bunch of 2v 289's in my area. Roughly, how common are 289 hipos? I used to have one, in my 66 f-100, but it got sold, and i have yet to find another contendor.

I had in mind a 4v 289 if i couldn't get ahold of a hipo. either way, i was going to run a bit peppier lunati shaft, do a little headwork(i plan on rebuilding the engine before dropping it in. 1300mile road trips aren't fun with a breakdown),putting my 650cfm 4bbl holley on, with a weiand dual plane intake.

Thanks for reading guys. Any ideas or recommendations would be great.

HiPO's are extremely hard to find. Especially an all original matching numbers one. A 4v 289 will be good enough to move you across that great span. Unless you already own a hipo finding one someone is willing to part with will be extremely hard IMO. I already own one that came out of my car that im saving for better days when I have a bigger cash flow.

Yeah, figured that. I was upset when the f-100 sold. case of mom selling it when you are gone. for some reason she failed to remember that it was selling for 1200 dollars, because it was not going with the engine in it *sobs*.

So, what is the best 289 head I can get? I don't recall, are all of the 4v heads(sans hipo) the same valve/port size, or was there changing sizes(i know ford usually changed port/valve sizing every few years for some reason, on their 'performance' engines).

Thanks for the fast reply too. If you want, you can hit me up on AIM/MSN (oshinokeru sama - aim / floyd_tf@hotmail.com - msn)

As far as it goes, how much work needs to be done to a 4v head to set it up to be 'hipo' esq? You need to machine in the seats, and tap the studs, so they will be 'thread in' yes? Forgive me, I am a bit foggy on the nit pick differences.

should tell you everything you need to know

I am curious tho...why do you want to build a k code 289 for a 71 car that didnt have that engine as an option andalready has a correctengine that is being rebuilt?

Why not just throw a cheap 302 or 351 in it?

1) I loathe the 302, so common. I am not really 'building' it up. i just want it to have enough power to make the trip, without being dead in the water. I just want a 4v, with some minor head work, new cam/intake, and play with the timing till it is just right, honestly. It had the 351c 4v in it factory. The 351c had the cam bearings go out. it's been bored .03 over already, and needs another rebuild. I could sleeve the block, but i want to drop a 289 in for the trip, because it will consume a bit less gas, than the 4v cleveland.

I have a 351 windsor setting that needs a rebuild. it is also a 2v setup, so it also will need new heads, to even be worth driving. Anyone who has driven a stock 351w knows what i am talking about. It is a slug for it's displacement. Besides, I am an avid fan of the 289. First v8 was a 289 hipo, and it stole my heart. Second v8 was the 351c. And, out of the two, the 289 was actually 'managable' mileage. the clevland drank gas like cocacola on a hot day. But, I also never kept my foot out of it either... *whistles*

Forgive me, but are all the 289 heads the same, save for hipo having the 'cups' for the springs, and threaded studs? I was reading up on the head specs here : http://www.carmemories.com/cgi-bin/v...erience_id=131

And they all are marked with the same valve sizes. Are the 289's with 2v/2bbl intake/carb layouts using the same valve size, but smaller ports? If so, I believe i have a pair of 289 heads setting in my garage. What's the casting i should be looking for on them? c#ae-*letter* correct? And the final letter denotes the 'engine' it was on. like the A, C, D, K type 289's yes? Thank's for all this help tonight guys
