Default Rear end ?

Can anyone tell how much gear oil is in the rear end of my 67 Coupe with a,289 .c4 300 gears. When I check the oil I just fill it till it starts to run out right.

Yup, fill it till it starts to run back out the fill-plug. I believe thats roughly 2qts.

I'm wrong, looks like an 8 inch is 2 1/4 quarts. I stand corrected.

Thanks .So at 2 1/2 quart is 80 oz . I topped my rear up and it took 18 oz .I guess this is not bad,. I have a small leak on the driver side that I will need to fix.

Actually now they're starting to reccomend filling trans/diffs so the fluid level is just at the bottom of the hole, but not running out. That way there's not extra oil in there overloading the seals. If it does run out, it's not the end of the earth. The way I see it, is if it's slightly overfilled and does overload the seals, it'll leak out until it stops overloading the seals, and then it's all good.

I fill mine with nitrogen. Improves mileage.

Technically - by letting the diff go completelydry, you are filling it with 78% Nitrogen (or whatever the mixture of sea level air is)! Now liquid nitrogen...we may have solved any heat issues dealing with those pesky friction gears.

wow.. Nitrogen.. Besure that you dont over fill or you may increase wear on the inside of the gears, resulting in a bald band down the middle of the gear.
