Basicly any rear end can work in a early mustang if your willing to do some cutting and welding.I believe the 8.8 out of the explorer will fit but don't hold me to that.Id never use one since the 8 inch and 9 inch are a stronger housing.
i've done it, i've got it in my 67. i took mine from a 1989 SSP Mustang - i bought a pinion yoke from inland empire driveline and 2 new spring perches, bolted right in after that and works great. definitely worth it.
You would have to have the 8.8 cut down. The 67 and up rear ends are wider than the 64 1/2- 66 rear ends. Still they are cheap, can be built to be just as strong as a 9 inch, and are way lighter. Go for the 8.8.
Thanks for the inputs, I have access to an 8.8 already set up with 5 bolt axels, 4.10 gears and it has an aftermarket locker as well as being a disk brake rear. IT is what I want, but didnt want to get it it wasnt going to fit.
