Default 1970 rusty cowl

Just bought a 70 grabber mustang. Needs alot of work (but it did make the hour and a half drive home). It needs alot of rust repair , I can handle floorboards, trunk, doorskins... maybe, fenders, (probably not quarter skins)but my question is what difference would it make if I sealed off the top of the cowl since it has holes in the bottom. I think replacing the cowl is beyond my capabilities.

Are you sure the cowl is full of holes? Pour water into it and see if it leaks into the car.Sealing the cowl is an option but your fresh air vents and AC wont work.If you can handle the floorboards and doorskins I'm sure you can handle the cowl too. There are some great articles about how to do that in the FAQ.
I got lucky with mine and it had a good cowl on it,butI did have to go through the floorboard and door issue,Mine was wrecked in just about the same place as your is ,only much worse.

Good Luck
Jeff

Thanks for the replies. It probably seems stupid but I dont see why the vents wouldnt work since the cowl opens to the bottom of the car. Also , I got it for $3500.00 on craigslist

Looks like a nice find for 3500.

Looking at the 3rd picture you posted and if you are that far you can do the cowl. I just recently took mineoff. I have not plugged welded donorin place yet since with the cowl off it so much easier to do behind dash pieces. I'm puttingnew heater and air cond cores. Also cleaned up wiring and put new firewall pad in place and removed rust and painted firewall. In any case the hardpart was remove spot welds - plan on spending a few hour doing that. \

I would not seal off especially with how far you you already have torn it down. You'll regretthat you did notdo it right later.

I've got 2 70s - one where cowl is good and it nice getting fresh air thru it in the summer.

I've got pics I usedfrom another poster that helped convince me I can handle it and my welding skills are definitely subpar. Postan email addres and I'll send them to you.

Also in case you did not know you can buy repo cowl pieces now for 69/70.

Good luck.

Found it....I hadn't seen them when I looked before, and just assumed they were like alot of other 69/70 sheetmetal...non-existant.

I could fit my hand through the holes in mine.

But now, it is more heavily sealed than ANY MUSTANG from the factory.

2coats of sealer and primer, then 2 coats of black truck bed liner.

Ill post pics later.

Got to agree with the rest, if you're going to repair the other problems just do the cowl and get it over with. Better than worrying about it after you finish the project and knowing there's still holes and rust. Mine was way worse but it's all better now.
Good luck
