Flames out the carb on throttle
I hope to get some advice on here i am just starting to learn carb's, i have a 67 coupe with a 302 engine out of a later model granada. Now my problem is when i slowly press on the throttle the engine acts fine and sounds good, but when i step on it any faster then that it stumbles and either flames or smoke shoots out of the carb. I have tried adjusting the distributor for timing and no help, also the voltage at the coil drops 2v then teh rest of the car? It has the duraspark ignition.. thanks for any tips on fixing this
fully agreed. your timing is probably way off.
make sure to have a fireextinguisher and a fireblanket ready
if it ignites before the intake valve closes you'll have that problem.
a) disconnect your vacuum advanceon distri side and block trhe hose. you might have that hooked up to the wrong port.
b) if that doesn't help retard your timing by 10 degress and see if that issue is gone.
if the issue still persists, you will need to verify OT on balancer as next step.
Unfortunately i don't know any easy way to do it unless you have a piston stop tool
the problem with the balancer is quite common. so the timing marks might be completely inaccurate
edit: actually the longer I think about it i'm not sure if that's cause by late or early ignition. try both directions to be on safe side

Okay i went back to check the vacuum advance, i realized i changed out the carb a few weeks ago and it was a little different, this is where i connected the hose
Also i noticed when the rpms are higher, like if im holding the throtle and 1/2, and then floor it, it does not do the same thing, no stalling, or anything coming out of the carb, its only at idle or low rpms that it does this

seems an autolite2100 carb. for that the vacuum advance hookup seems correct.
as mentione before try advaning or retarding the ignition.
check as well:
get rid of distributor cap
a) there's a spindle in the distri that holds the rotor.
you should be able to turn it a bit in one direction and when you let go it should snap back (springs)
b) when you can move the spindle back or forth then the bearings of that spindle are shot and you'll never get an accurate timing (it'll constantly change)
c) there should be a contact braker mounted on the base plate. this base plate should move with your vacuum advance, but not in any other direction.
unplug the vac hose from carb and suck on it. you should see the plate move. when it moved as far as it can, block the hose with tongue. it should stay there until you let go. if it doesn't do that your vac advance canister is shot (but this will not cuase the problems your describing). but it should give you and indication which direction the braker plate is supposed to move.
I had an old distri where the plate was loose causing all sorts of trouble
I'm still convinced that your timing is way off, but not sure what causes it. a faulty distri or the markings being wrong
to what marking have you set your timing ? are you using a strobe?
at the same time, most distributors show the vac advance straight forward when timed correctly. this is not something we can rely on or measure but the vacuum hose is strechted to it's limits. so I guess try turning the distributor clockwise and see what happens.
ohh ... and as well check your firing order

Thank you i will start checking tomorrow i am done messing with it today but i hope one of those helps, the timing was actually set by a friend of mine im not any good at setting them i dont really know what im doing when it comes to that.. maybe ill get someone else to check the timing to confirm it is right.
This forum is great! so many answers so fast im glad there is a place to go for help
