i have always wondered the same thing 1970coupe..sorry i cant help but i am interested to see what others will say. i would imagine though that it depends on the engine and the set up (more built the motor is the higher idle? im not sure though)

yeah i wish we could get our answer too
well im just curious because it seems at higher speeds my transmission takes forever to shift. i have a stock 351c 2v if that helps.

there's no way a car will make more power when the idle is lower
it'll be the exact same.
i only have suspicions on having the idle low being good (means i don't know for fact):
sounds good, better gas/mileage, more economy friendly, and probably some smoother driving

imagine your idle being at 2000 .... no we're not talking some odd race cars ... ;-)

If the idle speed is set too high, the butterflies may have the transfer slots uncovered at idle, and the off idle throttle response will be poor. You can tell this has happened because as soon as you get into the gas to leave a stop, the car hiccups for a second.

No power advantage. Won't shift any different.

Default RE: IDLE

With a high idle you are closer to the stall converter hooking up - so slightly quicker. But not worth doing. Just set it 750 (Spec IIRC). Now, advancing the timing a wee bit - that'll help the launch... as long as it doesn't knock or ping.

A too high idle may cause 'run on' when shutting it off as well.
