Default C4 Front pump seal...

Hello to all. I got to drive my car today finally, and after about 15 miles, I started up a small hill and got into it a little bit when I heard a weird noise and noiticed smoke out the back of the car, I pulled over and looked underneath and trans fluid was leaking out. Anyway, long story short, the front pump seal is leaking pretty badly. The trans never slipped any, so thats good, and I was able to slowly limp the car back to the shop slowly with no problems. I dont really understand how this couldve happened, I had gotten in it way harder many times before that and didn't have any problems. Anybody have any ideas as to what it could've been???

Typically front seals don't just go out like that, are yousure the front pump isn't cracked? (happened to me on a FWD dodge caravan and after the 5th seal change we found the crack)
