Default Finally found a 4-speed toploader... now what?

Finally came across a 4-speed toploader at a local swap meet today for a good price. What else am I going to need, and where can I find them?

So far, here's what's on my list:
[ul][*]Clutch and Brake Pedals (can't find anywhere)[*]Clutch and Brake Pedal Support (can buy new)[*]Clutch (?)[*]Bellhousing (quite a few around)[*]Linkage (can't find anywhere)[*]Shifter (can buy new)[/ul]
Is there anything I'm missing? Any ideas on the pedals and linkage? I've been checking Ebay and Craigslist regularly, but I'm still hoping someone makes reproduction, or SOMETHING that will work.

Thanks.

Whoa, just noticed this:

http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/ite...sp?T1=7519A+01

All of the pedal assemblies I've seen come with both brake and clutch together. I'm not sure if they're both already attached to the support, but there's definately a lot of hardware missing from that. Here's the support: http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/ite...sp?T1=51508+01.

Any idea where I'd get a brake pedal? Is it the same as the brake pedal for the automatic, just with a smaller pad or something? They don't seem to sell the brake pedal.

everything goes through ebay,...........if you can wait long enough, it will go through there. the clutch pedal and the brake pedal are attached to a bar/assymbly. you also need a "z" bar, which moved the clutch when you push the pedal. there is a part with the other guy sent you a link for...........cant think what it's called, but it mounts to the frame/fire wall, and makes the pedals stable. automatic brake pedal is different..........they are more "rombus" shaped.........disc brake ones have a silver donut that says disc brakes on it, both for manual, and automatic, by the way, for the other guy who commented here.
any time you are looking for 40+ year old stuff............it doesnt grow on trees.........
clutches, pressure plates, throw out bearings,.........you can get all that stuff from almost ANY auto parts store. to find stuff like bell housings, etc,...........call around to lots of junk yards, or even some of the old time/long in business type mechanic's shops in your area, or transmission shops. there'll be SOMEONE in that crew, that knows a guy, who knows a guy, who knows where some of that stuff is, and you can track it down that way. ask questions to people on ebay,..........if they are selling old ford tranny's, they probably have, or had, the shifters, etc too, or have buddies who have it too. it's networking. shifter and linkage you can get from hurst, or one of those companies that sells that kind of stuff...........it comes as a kit most of the time. craigs list, you can find all kinds of stuff too, post a "wanted" ad on there,.........but most of the guys you are looking to bump into,...........dont know beans about computers most of the time. you can post ads on here too, most of the guys on here seem to check back all the time, and like your question here.........didnt take too long to get a couple responses!!
just think of it as, "if it was easy,...........everyone would be doing it!", and then think how much it would cost for the stuff you are looking for!! he he
would be a lot harder to find, and cost a lot more!
i bought a shifter for my current project on ebay, it has the linkage on it, but is missing one of the levers/bars.......a good tranny guy can take a piece of rod, and make the one i need,..........it's not rocket science, if they know what they are doing. if not,...........then i'll have to find one,........but it's not the end of the world. my shifter was only for a 3 speed, and it cost $25 i think.............one for a 4 speed sells on there for $75-125 probably, and a hurst shifter 4 speed kit probably costs new $300 or so.
that should give you enough ammo to begin your quest,.............yours isnt too tough. there are plenty of them out there, just will take some digging. i had a 4 speed tranny in my bedroom for the last ......................8-10 years,..........just listed it up for sale a few months ago on ebay. i've had it all those years,.............and, sad to say, i didnt even know what i had,..........i had saved it for a "spare" for my '66 GT,.......and what better place then the bedroom,....RIGHT??? turns out, it was for a falcon.........boy, was i dissapointed...........but,.............made someone happy! AND,..............i've got room for another one in the bedroom now! ..........NOT!

also, there are some great books out, that go through and show all of the options for different mustangs,..........show the different color combinations for paint/interior, what the stripe kits looked like, what the engines looked like,...........etc. personally, i like to have everything "original",.............i dont want to put a 5 speed tranny in my '66 mustang,..........wouldnt really even want all the fancy front end steering kits, definitely wouldnt be interested in a "granada" disc brake kit set up,.........or that kind of stuff. your finished car will look best,.............in my opinion,.........with all the right stuff on it...........factory rally wheels if you want cool looking wheels/rims on it,........or spinner hub caps, etc........rather then all the crazy bullet wheels and crap. different strokes for different folks........but you are dealing with a piece of "artwork" in a sense.........yep, some of that stuff looks and performs way better then original 1960's technology, but that's what you are driving............so why not get your pony to look the best (in your own opinion) via options from "the day",..........but bottom line is, it's your car, and you should do what you like to it,.....and what will make you happy. i'm not driving mine for anyone else's enjoyment except mine. my mother tried to get me to sell it for,.............18 years now...........so i can get something "nice" to drive.....instead of my explorer, which FINALLY died on me..........after MANY headaches,...........i wouldnt trade my '66 GT mustang for a brand new mustang of any kind,...........not that mine is ALL THAT,..........but it's mine. i had a guy come by and knock on my door for the last 3 years, trying to buy it. i hated to even have it parked outside, because of all the rotten college kids that live in my neighborhood, get drunk, tear off mirrors, bend radio anntenna's, break windows, etc,.................but i have to give this one guy credit. he started out pretty low, like $4000 i think,..........and ended up coming back,.........and coming back...........and coming back..........leaving notes on my door, etc,...........i got him up to an $18000 offer,.............still told him no,...........i'd rather walk, and have it to drive for special days, then i would to sell it, and buy some other turd, that in 3 years or so, will have all kinds of mechanical problems,..........not to mention the THOUSANDS of dollars i'd "loose" in depriciation,...........etc. mom couldnt ever understand..............hell, maybe there's just something wrong with me,.......but hey,..............it's MY mustang,......right!?
didnt notice it was you posting a question, to your own question,..........getting late. my current "project" car had one of those parts that mounts to the firewall/floor, to stabalize the pedals, so i know the part you are looking for there, cant sell mine, because the floors were completely cut out of this vehicle, and the previous owner bought a new one...........at least i dont think the old one is still there...........it costs about $60 for a factory original (ford) part like this, i can send you digital pics of it, if you need to see it from different angles or whatever.........i have not ever put one in, so i dont know how it fits in there, but i have it in the box, so i could show you what it looks like easy enough. i could look at my '66, it's a manual also, 4 speed though, instead of 3 speed, but part is the same.
best way to find out stuff you dont know about your mustang though, is ask lots of questions. someone will answer ya........hopefully they know what they are talkin' about!!
at least they will try for ya. bunch of good guys on here! i just found it, and so far, i've amazed myself, in what all i can answer on here...........not having done much on any mustangs since i was in high school or a little after. sometimes i even amaze myself! he he

Have you gotten catalogs from the major Mustang places (NPD, CJ Pony Parts, Virginia Classic Mustang, etc)? There might not be one supplier that has everything you need but you should be able to find all of it between the various big ones.

Buy a shop manual to start with! Should tell you everything you need. NPD and a number of other venders show blown assemblies of the trany and parts. Order all the catalogs you can find for these and to price watch.

The clutch / brake assembly can usually be found on eBay.. try a search. There are is at least one listed that I saw for a 66. As typical with eBay you'll find people asking 500.00 for these! Don't bother with those and simply wait a bit as you'll find them MUCH cheaper. I see one for a 66 now @ about 30.00 bucks. A number of places sell new linkage though its expensive. Might want to look into using a hydraulic setup instead of the linkage. Easier on the foot/leg/back/etc and can be put together for less than to equal what the older linkage goes for. Clutch disk and pressure plate can be bought from most local parts shops or from many of the Mustang vendors.

Don't forget that if you are going to use a flywheel that came with the 4-speed that it'll need to be resurfaced! You'll also need a new pilot bearing, throwout bearing and an alignment tool.

Montanas Mustang +1! Get the catalogs, shop around, search eBay, ask local shops, etc.

yep, they are right, those mustang specialty dealers have/can get the clutch plates, etc,........just keep in mind that they are selling "exclusive" kinds of parts, ie,.......you dont go to napa auto parts, looking for repro seat covers,..............
clutch plates, throw out bearings, and the mechanical parts will be, usually, very expensive from those mustang specialty shops,......so it pays to do a little shopping around. a clutch plate,........is a clutch plate.........is a clutch plate, unless they sell you some cheap chinese crap.
one of the reasons i am the way i am, and like to use "factory" disc brake set ups, etc, instead of putting a hydrolic clutch in it, is because if you make all kinds of modifications to your mustang, if and when it breaks down somewhere, and, since it sounds like you are not mr. mechanical, (not that i AM mr. mechanical, by any means), it makes it more difficult for someone else to work on your car. if you go back factory, when that happens, you dont have to try to remember, that you put a granada front end on it, so the tie rods are different, etc,.............when the guy helping you thinks he is working on a '66 mustang,.........and gets parts for a '66 stang,...........they are going to be different,...........and then you've got problems. remember..............it WONT be a bright sunny day, when your stang has a problem.............it'll be cold, rainy, overcast, you'll be pissed off.........etc.......... that's just the nature of the beast.
when i went to pick up my new "project", i took my wonderful ford explorer to chicago, 4 hours away, with a trailer........which was a bitch in itself, because i had a hell of a time renting a trailer BECAUSE i had a ford explorer (did all the paperwork paid, and walked outside with the rental company guys THREE times, only got the trailer on the third time), made it to chicago ok,.......and blew a head gasket about 1 1/2 hours on the way back. sat on the roadside on I-65 for 8 hours...........it was cold, but not TOO cold,.........til the sun went down........then it was cold as could be...........windy........snowy. miserable. AND,..........EXPENSIVE.......tow truck cost me $600........and i couldnt leave either car, or they would have been broken into, or stolen. nothing ever breaks when you can nurse it home...........
when i was pretty young, a friend of mine bought a cadillac, and every mechanic he went to, knew that he didnt know a thing about his car,........someone had put a different engine in it, and it would cost him,.........in the 1970's.............several hundred dollars to get it tuned up,........and he would get the same story every time from the toothless filthy dirty mechanics............. "hell,........looks like SOMEONE put in a differn't kinda motor in here...........i'm gonna havt'a spend some TIME on this one to figur' it out....", and....they wouldnt ONLY take their time, they would sodomize him when it came to pay time too.......

Interesting, their site says they're sell partial kits too. I wonder if they'll just sell the pedals...
