302 has developed a ping
We just developed a ping in out '65 coupe, 302 2V. The ping can only be heard on hard acceleration in all gears. Is this a timing problem? Bad gas? Do I need some gas additive? Thanks guys.
could be timing, try retarting the timing a bit. did it just start all of a sudden or did you adjust something then it started. if it just randomly started then maybe it could be bad gas.
whats you compression ratio? you can upgrade gas go from regular to mid grade or premium. or back of the timing as stated above. also grab yourself a can of seafoam from autozone pour about 1/3 of the bottle down the carb(slowly not all at once) it will start choking and wanna die. after youve poured it in kill the engine and let it sit for about 15 minutes then pour the rest in the tank this will break up carbon deposits might help with you pinging problem
You say you "just devloped" a ping. That implies that it wasn't there before, and you didn't make any changes. That brings to mind3 things: Bad gas, vacuum leak, and a lean mixture.
You could try adding a bottle of octane boost and see what happens. If the ping goes away, you know it was bad gas.
Look for loose, broken, or split vacuum lines and connections. Don't forget the power brake booster if you have one.
Check for a lean condition. Start by checking fuel pressure. Pull the jets and see if they're clogged. Check the pump diaphragm if you have one.
