Default Coil direction?

Before i screw anything up, I have a newb question.

Does it matter which direction the coil is?

I plan on having it laying on its side, on top of the manifold. will that be ok?

Place the coil so that the poles are toward the bottom.

It depends on what type of coil you're referring to....

Some aftermarket coils (MSD Blaster as an example) state in their directions that the coil should not be mounted on it's side.

Disregarding this could lead to coil overheating and ignition failure... ask me how I know.

MSD markets a gel filed(as opposed to a standard oil filled) coil that can be mounted in any position.

I believe that the factory coil is mounted on the intake manifold laying lengthwise with the wiring connections facing towards the front of the car. But i've seen them mounted to the front of the left/right head also.

I think your main concern would be mounting it away from places producing a lot of heat, especially with a performance coil. Here's where mine is mounted and I think it is a good accessible position close to the distributor.
