Default new top end?

I curently have a freshly rebuiltstock 306 i nmy 66 fastback.I was told thecompression in 9.5 to 1. I will be using this car on the street quite a bit. I want good torque off idle and to pull good until 6k. I was thinking afr 165's or edelbrock's new 170 pro port cnc (can not find a price). I want to go with a roller cam/lifters. I think i will use crane energizer aluminum roller rockers. After i get my set up i will call either comp or crane for a custom grind cam. I plan on getting a weiand stealth intake and using the 650 holley i already have. So will the combo i have work good? I like trying to find the best of everything and peice it together, rather than just buy a kit. How much will my gas milage suffer from this change? I already have 1 5/8 hooker longtubes and crane hi-6 box with a unilite dizzy and 40k coil. Also tko and 9" with 3.5 tru-trac. Any suggestions or input welcome. Also what do you think it will run in the 1/4 after the top end with street tires?

Thanks
Matt

It'll run very well. Not that different than my setup. With good chassis tuning and driving it should be able to go 12's on street tires if it's built well with light weight internals. Last time at the track mine went low 13's shifting early and tuned poorly, and my cam is an OTS that's not huge and I run a 3.00 gear. If you run the Pro Port 170s let us know how they turn out. The Performer series heads seem to be about on par with AFR 165's, so the new Pro Ports "by the numbers" should run better. Dunno on the price though, haven't seen one. You basically have to call Edelbrock to find out.

AFR's have very good port and chamber designs. Edelbrock's heads are a close second in terms of making power. I haven't seen what the new Pro Ports can do for power though. I'm wondering what new designs AFR might have in the works.

i'm swapping to a set of world windsor jr's that were ported - 180-190 cc on my 289 but i'll be stroking to 331 to take even more advantage. sounds like you'll have a good setup, just don't be too disappointed if you don't scrape in the 13's my mild 289 barely hits 14.3's

thanks for the replies. I won't be taking this car to the track much, but just wanted a figure of what it'll run. It will be a month or so before i have enough money. The intake is about the only thing i can buy and use now.Everything else needs to go on at the same time right? I am going to do some research between the afr's and edelbrocks and see what i can come up with. I was also looking at edelbrocks proflow intake with fuel injection. Looks nice, but i think i will stay carburated for a while. aslo what type of mpg should i see with this setup? My motor turns 2k at 70 mph, so i have a decent hiway gear. Any suggestions?

Thanks
Matt

afr 165 are a great street head along with the X-celerator intake. We ended up doing that intake swap from a rebuilt 289, bigger valves and a cam on and went from a RPM intake to The X and the X didn't give up anything on the street. Do you have a roller block or are you going to do the conversion... Conversion roller cams are not cheap.[:@]
