if you have a ban saw at your disposal I would just go the wood rout. I would think it would be easier to wrap the wood with carpet rather than metal

 

i can do a sheet of metal and then dynamatting then maybe a foam layer and then carpet. i can weld a little rail on the inside of the fender for the tray to sit on so it doesnt fall down.

If you build it right so that it fits snug you shouldnt have to build any sort of rail. I just built mine so that it carried in towards the middle of the trunk and it sits in just fine

 

Looks good, but now you can't mount your spare tire in the correct spot.

 

Looks fabulous! That is exactly what I'm planning on doing to my 69, minus covering the fuel filler. I might cover the rear lights though because right now my spare tire knocked out the light bulb haha we'll see.

But it looks great man, I'll be using this when I go about doing mine
