Default question about throttle return spring

ok..my spring was all fine and dandy before..then i had carb problems and swapped carbs a few times. i put it back how i believe it was before..but im having problems..theres a little metal piece below the spring when the throttle is closed..then as you open it the spring bends around the piece and gets stuck on the bottom if you go close to WOT...then the throttle gets real light and i hate it like that..heres pics to show you whats happening..

there it is on top of the metal bracket thing ^^

there you can see it bending a little bit..it wants to pop on the other side of the metal piece ^^

and there you can see it on the underside of the piece..i don't know what to do to fix it..if i change where the spring hooks on the the throttle is really light and seems to float..what can i do to fix this problem??

also..one other question..what are these called and what do they do? the bars under my leafs

the spring is backwards. there should be a tab on the manifold that one side of the spring attaches to, and the other side hooks on to the 90 deg. bends on the linkage. (if its stock linkage)

red is the spring:

That is not the proper location for the throttle return spring. Go to your nearest chain parts store and pick up the generic return spring kit. Attach the springs (use both)on one endto the bend in the throttle linkage and the included bracket on the other. The bracket can be bolted to an open intake boss, or even one of the carb studs.

Those bars are traction bars. They prevent the axle from twisting under acceleration and deceleration, eliminating wheel hop and improving traction. As long as the bushings are all ok, leave them be

i know what youre talking about though, i had the same exact problem.

and i actually had 2 springs on my stock engine, the PO put a 2nd for stiffer pedal action. and it would hook and fling off the throttle arm like yours does.

I'd recommend against using an intake bolt for the bracket mount. There should be a couple threaded bosses on the back of the intake that are more convenient (and won't disturb the intake gasket clamping force), and the d-side rear carb stud can usually be used if there aren't any available bosses.

i just went out there and found a different spring that i used to attach to the 90 deg bend in the linkage..it seems like it's perfect, my only question is will the spring stay on the bend? it's right in the 90 deg corner..will it stay and not slip off or anything?

Depends on where the other end is attached.

what does WOT stand for?

and yeah the bracket actually goes on a boss as tad was saying. i think theres 3 in a triangle patter made just for the factory bracket. but i was just using an intake bolt as an example even though its the wrong way to do it. the PO of my car used one of the intake bolts so thats why it was on the top of my head.

ps, dave. you car looks likes its coming along pretty well now that its painted.
