Default Starting problem

WTF did I do??? I jacked the car up today so I could properly align my front bumper and when I was done, I dropped it down, got in and it wouldnt start. The battery was dead to begin with so I thought i'd jump start it again just like I did about an hour earlier when I pulled it out of the garage. I go to hook up the jumper cables and 3 of the 4 for cables are connected to the batteries of either car, whenI touchthe last blackcable to groundI get a huge spark.

I disconnected the battery from my car and connected it to the other car as if it were being jumped and all is fine.

Whatcould it be causing the sparks??? I'm thinking there's a short somewhere but I didnt touch any wiring at all. Any typical places I should check??

Default RE: Starting problem

the spark indicates:
a) short
b) something sucking serious power

when you say you hook up your car to the other car's battery (with your battery completely) disconnected and that works fine for youy then my first guess would be:
full flat battery that sucks a lot of power on connect
shorted battery

So from this it can be either: perfectly normal behaviour or the stangs battery in pain

what I would do is to check and then hook up the stangs battery to a battery charger just to be sure

If I understood you right, you said you got a spark when you connected the last jumper cable connection. If that is the case it is fairly normal for this to happen if the battery chargeis very low. One thing that I've always been told though is that you should connect the black ground leads first. Then you should connect the red leads. Also, I've always been told that you shouldn't connectthe black leadsto the negative posts on the battery, but you should connect it to a ground connection such as a bracket on the engine.

You could try to jumpstart it without your battery connected...ie. disconnect the two cables from the mustang battery and connect the black jumper lead to the ground cable, then connect the red lead to the power cable....if you get a spark then this could possibly indicate that you have a shorted wire. This quite possible if your battery keeps going dead.
