Default Making stuff

So, we all do it. You just can't ever quite find what you need, and resort to making something. Well, I made 2 somethings today. 1 was an accelerator pump cam for the carb. I just didn't quite have the right size/shape cam that I needed, and had an extra orange one that I took and filed the opening ramp down to give it a more gentle profile. Still get the same total fuel delivery, but it's not all mostly with the initial throttle opening. I also had to make a shifter boot, since I got tired of the craptastic rubber ones from tearing(the heat around here is BRUTAL on vinyl and rubber/plastic interior parts during the summer). I made one out of some scrap denim, and sewed it together with dental floss(it's very strong as a thread). And yes, I can sew. It's a rather handy skill to have actually. Anyway, they both work well and were basically free.

So, what all have you guys made? I know Daze makes a LOT of stuff for his car.

I'm in the process of trying to make an "A" pillar for my 66. I have the mold made and just need to the metal bent around it. I'll let y'all know how it comes out.

I am with you there on the sewing part. Friends give me a hard time about knowing how but who do they come crying to when they need interior work?

I thought about the interior thing myself. Everyone loves a guy that can do great custom interior, but ignore the fact he has to be a master sewer to do it.

When I got ripped off by the speed shop that installed my headers they wrapped the throttle spring around my brand new ceramic coated headers. Scratched them up real bad. I had to make a bracket off the headers to hold the spring. It looks good but the headers are still scratched and 2 years later I still think ugly thoughts about a certain bunch of thieves at the speed shop.

Lets see... Full suspension, roll cage, axles, wiring, assesory brackets for the engine, you name it, I've done it to my jeep. At the shop, I worked on an 87 Toyota 4 Runner, and installed an 88 Turbocharged Supra Engine into it. Also, I did a rear Chevy spring conversion on it. I made a TON of parts for that thing because it was all one off. On the car, bascally, I made my bezels for the guages I just put in, which I drew in autocad and then had lazer cut out of 18 GA Stainless Steel. I also made a retaining ring for the gear inside the windshield wiper motor.

Col!ectively, this thread is as good a description of old-time hotrodding as you"re likely to find. Or self-reliance. Sometimes, the "something" that you have to make is the tool to do the real job. Anyway, it is a mindset that ranks DIY high on the list of ways to solve aproblem, particularly the unusual ones.

The accelerator pump cam that 67mustang302 built/modified sounds very similar to an eccentric throttle cable sector that I made for an Accel SuperRam throttle to slow down its initial opening rate (too much, too soon with twin 58mm throttles= lousy for auto-X and hard cornering in general). The cable itself is a bicycle brake cable, which replaced the OE rigid metal carburetor linkage.

Edit - I do not understand why this site filters out the word "col lective" out from "col lectively" as if it were a profanity. . . ???????

For you Trekkies...the site is actually run by the Federation and they want no mention of the Borg.
