289 to 351
alright i know this has probably been beaten into the ground about 5000 times but i need the definitive. as i know i've got a bad bearing or 2 in my 289 - i'm thinking of just ditching the 40 year old block and going to a 351. the question is, what is reuseable from my 289? the flexplate and the balancer i heard is one since they are both 28oz, my heads obviously since i have performer rpm's - but what else? i know i need a new cam due to the firing order and also a new intake manifold because it's wider but.. anything else i have to look out for?
Not much else, if the heads will even work. Not sure if the tranny will bolt up, or the motor mounts. It may be a little heavier too. Age of the 289 block is of no concern as long as it isn't damaged or bored out too many times.
heads were designed for 351's anyway, they have 1/2" holes like the 351's. the motor mounts work but the weight isn't an issue. the big thing was me and the tranny, and not knowing if it'd go together or if i'd need a new plate to get it to mount correctly.
trans will mount up fine, and even your cam will work you just have to use the 289 firing order - though with a flat tappet cam its a gray area to reuse in another block even when you keep the lifters in order.
honestly, if your crank is damaged just swap it out and keep your 289 dude
